Well having read today about the UNC player, if Cal could get someone like him and Powell where we now have talent and experience it would hold a lot different meaning then depending upon the "great" Freshman who are going to spend most of the season learning.
What I don't want to hear next year is, "Oh they are going to be one of those teams you don't want to face at the end of the year." Really? We need proven players and not the "we're young."
I’m expecting Cal to get a late reclass steal coz that’s what he does. Probably also add two new style transfers. But he’ll be up against:
—Stable programs who have been succeeding traditionally every year
—Other blue bloods who have the same chip on their shoulder as we do now, only they won’t lose ALL their starters like we probably will
—Whoever is just naturally primed to be very strong next year
(All of which can steal new style transfers too)
I expect much hype before season starts. More hype because I don’t think we’ll tank quite so bad in November next season. Growing pains in December and January. Then a team that looks like it’s really rounding into form in February and March and hype will really grow. ESPN will be talking about the Return of Cal. Then we’ll bomb out in the Sweet Sixteen or maybe Elite Eight and have to listen to the Cal addicts say he really redeemed himself and we’re stupid. Then more of the same on and on and on and on. Wall, Boogie, Terrence Jones, AD, MKG, Randle, and KAT are not walking through that door anymore and we’re not playing a system that can win it all without them.
Best case or worst case is kind of open ended, but what isn't even a discussion, is the pg spot. There shouldn't be any disagreements on it. Cal simply needs to go get someone that can control every game we play.
Oral Roberts has the best lead guard in the game, Max Abmus is the reason that team is in the sweet 16. Put an average guard on their roster and they lose 12+ games and are an afterthought.
You'll read comments from some people that say the pg doesn’t need to be elite and I started to lean that way, but watching this NCAAT reminded me that if you don't have a great pg, you aren't going anywhere, well, unless you have Anthony Davis and MKG in the roster.
