“If anybody got a penalty this week, they had to immediately leave the practice field and run a lap around the field,” Frost said on his Thursday Sports Nightly appearance.

“We just added a little more consequence to some of those simple mistakes to make sure guys focus in even more and try to lock in that much more.”

That is all well and good but I would rather see stronger measures. Such as the first offensive lineman who gets the snap count wrong gets yanked for a half. We do that with running backs who fumble so why not lineman who screw up drives with dumb as **** penalties?

It's taken this long to do that?

Makes sense, the penalty issue has been a killer

It makes sense what you say here but ask yourself the question of do we really have the depth to do something like that? I honestly don’t think so, look how much worse our line looked with Cam out vs Northwestern... I agree there should be more severe consequences but I just don’t think we can have any of the starters out for a while half without damaging the offensive production any more

For every yard of penalty you are responsible for, you must show up that amount of minutes early and that amount after each practice the following week. Pending class schedule.

Year 3?

What the hell have they been doing for accountability the first 2 years?

We desperately need to start winning or this will just stay stuck on stupid

Finally! Should have been done long ago. Every lineman got a penalty against Northwestern. That’s plain pathetic. Also, a lot of our failures last week weren’t on the QB’s, but on the Oline.

Now, I will add that Martinez was 9-23 when NO pressure was on him.. means that he flat out couldn’t throw.

You can either keep bailing the boat out as it's sinking or you can fix the leak. We're 1-7 in the last 8 and this is basically a wasted season. Either fix the issues now, win or lose, or just continue losing to infinity. The dumb penalties gotta stop.

Good point on some of the plays not being the QB fault. After looking at this a couple of times, I'm not sure that it is the OL's fault either. Either Mills went to the wrong hole or something was screwed up with the blocking assignments, their DE and OLB weren't touched. Our right tackle went right past the DE to block the MLB, and our slot receiver went by both defenders to block on the other side. Just an example of the sloppy play we see on a regular basis.

That’s actually sound logic especially with a year like this one... this year is basically a wash so instill the discipline now and hope it pays off in the long run... I don’t like the thought of looking pathetic all year but I’d rather it be this year where there’s no butts in the seats and the season is already in the tank... plus it will only help to build some depth as other players will see the field since there will inevitably be plenty of kids that will have to sit until they fix the stupid penalties 🤷🏻‍♂️

Scenario: Jurgens doesn't snap the ball on correct count. Who do you pull?

Let's say Jurgens.

Then, the next series Jaimes does the same thing

Pull Jaimes.

What do we look like offensively at that point?

Pretty sad we're teaching kids stuff they should know in High School. I also think its the wrong approach (regarding all the false starts), aren't they running snap/pre-snap drills? Punishment isnt going to affect muscle memory or develop habbit.

Will Frost run a lap the next time we come back from a TV timeout and get a delay of game?

Exactly, or McCaffrey should have kept the ball and run outside. Can't tell if it was a read or designed give.

They appear to have the numbers with Luke and Kade outside with the one S on the goalline.

Probably a lot of over-reaction here, but the optics on this to a rabid fan base are not good.

You know I thought it was very strange that in an empty stadium we were getting so many false starts that were distributed among all our OL. If you watch Ethan Piper's press conference from a few days ago, he mentions Northwestern was making their "calls" right before the snap. Now, maybe he's being nice, but to me that sounds like they were intentionally trying to draw us into a penalty by mimicking the snap count. That is against the rules last time I checked, but hey, it's the Big Ten doing the officiating.

Boy ONE lap? Look out! That'll have 'em thinking twice! They do it again and Scott might issue a stern warning about them not getting ice cream after dinner!

I'm pushing 40 and out of shape, the punishment should be something I wouldn't find really easy to do. I just suspect that a college kid in the best shape of his life won't find it that motivating. IIRC back in the heyday it was stadium stairs until you wanted to die.

I remember an article I read on former Husker Jaimie Williams. He was told by Osborne early in his career after a couple of penalties that if he keeps doing it , that he could not play for him as he would get benched. He pulled him in his office and said this to him. When did Frost become so soft on these players he needs to start cracking the whip instead of worrying about hurting there feelings.

To add some color to that punishment, the coaches are gonna make a couple of them run with trash cans on their heads.

I think they wanted the culture to handle it, where your teammates would provide all the necessary motivation for not making mistakes..

this is where leadership comes in.. and we need it badly.

Public execution!!

But seriously some of these comments are ridiculous. You assume nothing has ever been done about things like penalties, because they are talking about what they are doing right now? No wonder coaches don't want to talk to the media.

What evidence do we have to believe anything has ever been done to punish guys for committing penalties? The same dudes are mostly playing and the rate of penalties has stayed unacceptably high.

Because A) They are a D1 coaching staff and B) They have talked about it before. Do you really think any coaching staff would chose to just ignore penalties? You can say they haven't been successful, but acting like it never occurred to anyone until now is just silly.

I went to one of our basketball practices one time. I think it was with Nee? He made the players run after a mistake but it was kind of silly as they dogged it more during the penalty lap than when they ran in practice! What's the point! Got to have a trainer stand there and make sure they run.

Luke should've kept it as his speed would've gotten him in the endzone. Someone missed an assignment and the reason DM got stuffed behind the line of scrimmage.

I think this is exactly spot on but I don’t know why you couldn’t have both
Seems like the penalty should be that your backup takes your reps with the 1’s while the offender runs lap(s)
