The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday approved allowing the use of one-way electronic communication devices for the purpose of calling pitches and plays. The rule goes into effect for the 2021-22 academic year.— Inside the NCAA (@InsidetheNCAA) August 12, 2021

Because just the tweet alone can easily be misinterpreted- this is not for calling balls and strikes. This is for relaying pitch calls from the dugout to the catcher/pitcher.

Well teams don’t have to use them. If you’re worried about it being hacked, you could just use signs, the way it has worked for years.

My first thought was of Cannizaro on the bench with Lee Begley on line 1 and Dustin Skelton behind the plate on line 2 and Canz getting the two of them mixed up.......

Doesn't the SEC already allow this or did I dream coaches talking to their catchers with a radio?

The rule should be the exact opposite. They need to outlaw calling pitches from the dugout. They need to stop the micromanagement that they allow at every level. They never teach the players how to play and think the game. Teach them in practice. Go over the lineups and hitters before the game. Come up with your game plan, then let the players execute it.

Baseball and football coaches have been signaling or sending in play calls for a long damn time.

Football is different. It is timed everywhere, there are so many people active at the same time, it would be too difficult if the information wasn't made available.

I know we have worked up to this modern coaching style over quite a few years now. Baseball is a series of generally one on one match-ups with a fairly fixed amount of options and actions that can occur. I know they are now introducing some timed situations, but if they just eliminate those 5 to 10 seconds of the coach sending in the pitch to the catcher then him relaying it to the pitcher the game would speed up. I know it takes a burden off the catcher, but he can see things they don't see from the dugout on how the hitter reacted to the previous pitches. Drives me nuts when a batter obviously can't catch-up to a fastball from a pitcher and the dugout calls a breaking ball or vice versa.

Also we now have all these arm bands or fanny packs and players looking for a signal between every pitch then looking at their arm band or fanny pack is just too much. You should know the situation. Glance at the coach and if he wants to do something then look. There was no reason for me as a hitter to look at third base with a 1-1 count, no one on, and 1 out. And there are a whole bunch more situations like that in a game.

Polkie always said the first 6 innings were ours and the last 3 were his. We were prepared for each situation that could occur and did communicate it with each other. It was pretty rare for the coaches having to get your attention and reposition you or totally change your plate approach.

Well girls can't really remember all the situations and then think on their feet like boys can.

When I coached pitchers and catchers in youth All Stars I would only give pitches to the catcher the first couple of innings if the catcher asked for it or in special situations. I also just made quick suggestions with simple signs giving that catcher the chance to call what he wanted and run things like they would when they got older. It was cool to watch players with both positions take control. Anyway, you can't get to complicated for that age just before high school. You try to make it as fun to play and learn as you can. I miss it sometimes. It was a long time ago and they probably complicate things quite well now.
