He did a good job there 72–28>41-13 conference with 2 first place ties and one outright .
The Seahawks were pretty bad ( 42-80) the four years before he was hired and never finished better than 8th in their conference in those 4 years.
Last winning year UNC Wilmington had was the 2007-08 season.
Keatts took over a bad program and made it a good one.
I think the Wolfpack made a good choice.

When I was at the ACC Tourney on Day 1 when NC State played - I was asking their fans who they wanted as Head Coach - and all wanted Archie Miller (NC State alum) - but all were reasonable that it would probably be the Keatts - the UNCW Coach.

Keats will be the guy known for the only person who could hold CJ Gettys under 5 points per game.
Keatts and Buzz Peterson, who recruited Gettys. The kid just was not a good fit in Keatts offense.

@BigEastPhil if you met reasonable NC State fans, then you were very lucky. The overwhelming majority of them are pretty delusional.

If NCSU didn't get Keatts they were going to offer Will Wade. Now it looks like Wade will be offered the Clemson job, sources say the Tigers will fire Brad Brownwell sometime today. Possibly this morning before the NCAA Tournament games begin.

Guy is probably a good coach, but seemingly underwhelming hire for a school that somehow thinks they should be on par with Duke and UNC. Sounds to me like they got rebuked more than once. This guy is going to beat Kryskeschkhgykhski and Cheater Williams?

Its a decent hire, not sure who they could realistically get but it makes you wonder why they fired Gottfried

Because they're NC State and they're delusional. Quick recent NCSU history:

Herb Sendek was there from 1996-2006 & started off with four straight NIT appearances, then missed the tournament...and they didn't fire him...then he goes to the NCAA Tournament the next five straight seasons but only advanced to the Sweet 16 once. During that time he finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 6th & 4th in the ACC. The fan base wanted better and Sendek basically said F-U and took another job.

After an amateur hour coaching search they basically had no choice but to offer the job to alum...and member of the 1983 championship team...Sidney Lowe. He had spent his entire coaching career as an assistant or head coach in the NBA (sound familiar).

In five seasons with Lowe they missed the post season completely three years and went to the NIT twice.

After another amateur hour coach search they hired Gottfried. He takes them to the NCAA Tournament his first season there and advanced to the sweet 16. He then gets them into the tournament the next three years advancing to the sweet 16 once. He followed that up with two losing seasons. His best finish in the ACC was T-4th.

So after five years of no tournament appearances, they announce during the season they're firing the guy who had taken them to the tournament in four of his six years. Why? Because they're NCSU and they have history, they've won two national championships (1974 & 1983) blah, blah, blah.

I guarantee you they thought they'd get Archie Miller because he is an alum but he was too smart to take that job.

Apparently the AD is a problem at NCSU. That being said Gottfried basically wore out his welcome. His programs turn into a mess because he has no ability (or desire?) to run a tight ship. This past off season he was forced to reassign assistant coaches. He also had a lottery pick and couldn't win.

Keatts is 44 years old, proven he can recruit well in North Carolina at UNCW and proven he can recruit period at Louisville.

The hiring of Keatts was a clear departure from how NC State handled their last few hires. That alone is a positive. Coach K and Ol' Roy (and Pitino) won't be around forever, so he's got the ability to make further inroads in the NC recruiting world and set up NCSU for sustained success in 2+ years.
