Going to try to put together some takeaways after every weekend this year, not that anyone cares to read but I like putting my thoughts to paper so to say.

But, alas I thought we had a solid weekend. On the mound we are going to be really close to elite if not that by seasons end barring injury. All three of the starters were near unhittable at times and at other times were shaky around the zone. Decaro was his normal self, without looking it seemed the breaking ball had a little more spin and velo than last year which will help because he got burned a few times last year when it was soft and up. Folger looked confident and steady, which was is refreshing to see. If he can replicate that performance time and time again, we’re going to be hard beat in a best of 3 series. Ryan Lynch is oozing 1.1 type stuff, running the fastball up to 98-99 and holding 94-96 through 90+ pitches is really good to see this early. The slider and change up looked good, he has a tendency to let the glove side come open which is when the fastball tends to run up and out. I don’t know that there is a collection of 3 better starters out there. The BP showed flashes of elite, Matty and Walker will be our go-to guys. But, really think Boston was the story out of the BP this weekend, he’s a physical RHP which you can never have enough of and if we get that same performance it makes a deep staff even better. The two freshmen showed some flashes with Glauber showing some zip on the fastball, the poise will come. I still think Seagraves, OJ and Percival will be large contributors out of the pen on the weekend as well.

I said it in one of the game threads, but the offense will come. Gavin was Gavin in game 1, and had some solid bat to ball outs throughout the weekend. Schaffner is going to be REALLY good for us in the lineup and at SS, I know he had a couple errors but he covers ground so effortless and has good arm strength to boot. Hull, reminds me a lot of Vance with the way he tracks the baseball in CF and I think he’ll come around offensively with some gap-gap power. Macon and Hynek both handled the pitching staff well behind the plate. Both also had nice weekends at the plate. I think Paulson will be a 20 HR guy, impressive weekend from him coming up probably equivalent to 2 levels of baseball. I hope and think Cooper will hit 15+ balls over the wall. Theres a little violence in his swing which I love to see, reminds me of Mac early in his junior year, he also handled the corner really well. Maginnis and Howe seemed to be solid to good defenders at the corners. Both did some good things at the plate as well. Good to see Rom Kellis come in and produce, and off the bat thought Carter got one in his AB.

Indiana will be a good ball club and will be good to see how they perform when the weather warms up in Indiana. Good start to baseball season, so glad it’s back.

i admit i always look forward to the wire-ups from ms. grace and likewise i enjoy/appreciate your insights/thoughts as well … look forward to more from you both this season

GO HEELS
I appreciate that! Grace is unrivaled! I like to put my thoughts down in a non formal way and engage in some conversation a little deeper than surface level.

Good stuff Colby. I don't have much disagreement with any of it.

My biggest takeaway is that the staff got to check a lot of boxes I'm sure they were hoping to check on the opening weekend:
  • Most importantly, win 3 games
  • Get Matthijs back on the mound post-injury. I know he surrendered the lead in game 3 but it was only because of an uncharacteristic error by Schaffner.
  • Get Flannery on the game mound and let him establish some rhythm and build some confidence. What a story it would be if he becomes a big piece of the bullpen this year. Rooting for him a little bit harder than everyone else just because of the path he has taken to get here when 95% of kids in his position would've transferred.
  • Get some freshmen (especially Glauber) on the mound in some high leverage spots and let him work out any freshman jitters
  • Use both catchers to set the tone that we won't have to wear Winslow down by making him catch 4-5 games a week
  • Platoon some guys in left field depending on game situation and R/L matchup. Maginnis seems to have the inside track for now but nice to see Sawyer Black and Carter French get some opportunities too.
Pitching staff looked as-advertised. Elite. Dynamite trio of weekend starters if Boaz can pitch with confidence and attack. Embarrassment of riches in terms of depth. To have the 3 starters we have, plus McDuffie, Matty, Glauber, Padgett, Chewy, Flannery, Holiday.....and we didn't even see Seagraves, Olin Johnson and Percival? Wow. That's 13 deep of names I could reasonably expect to see have big impacts this year and I may have forgotten 1 or 2. Obviously all 13 won't be big contributors (in a college season most staffs eventually settle on 7 or 8 guys they trust the most in the high leverage spots). But we certainly have the depth to cover for an injury or two (God forbid) if needed.

In terms of position players, I came away thinking we are really strong up the middle. Winslow/Gallaher/Schaffner/Hull all feel like they are poised for big years. I know the hits didn't come for Hull this weekend but you can see the tools are there.

Also feels like Paulsen and Nicholson are pretty secure in their roles. A few balls exploded off of Paulsen's bat. And while Nicholson struggled at the plate, his swing is violent and he played great defense all weekend.

So then in terms of the spots that are most up for grabs (LF, RF, DH), I came away very impressed by the two guys from Georgia State (Maginnis and Hynek). Both exceeded my expectations. It's a long season and I'm sure we will see different guys emerge throughout the year. But right now I like the idea of a platoon between Maginnis and Black, with the ability for one to pinch hit for the other throughout the game depending on matchups, and then we bring French in as a defensive sub if we have a late lead. Really hope Perry Hargett also puts his name in this conversation as well once he's healthy. Biggest question mark to me is whether this whole conversation stays focused on a bunch of guys and only one open spot (LF) or if both corner spots are up for grabs to some degree. Howe looked fine out there but didn't really create much separation in this conversation. But again, it was only 3 games in February. Perspective.

All in all, it was a great weekend. Would have had a sour taste in our mouths if Indiana's 2nd baseman could make a 30 foot throw and we had lost the last game, but that's baseball. Fun to see some Bosh Magic in February.

On to Richmond!

Good write up and like the deep dive into different aspects of the weekend. One thing I think got overlooked and maybe lost in the thrill of the walk off was the bull pen decision on Saturday. We used our best arm (McDuffie) G1 when we were up big and didn’t really need him. Seemed a better time to use a newbie in a lower pressure setting. Fast forward to G2 and would have felt a lot more comfortable with McDuffie coming in relief when the game was close, but he was already burned. We ended up winning by a miracle and looking on the bright side…you got valuable, tight game experience for some of the new guys. But it was lucky and we got away with that decision.

I don't know much
But it Could be Mcduffie-in Forbes mind-has "earned" the right to rack up a lot of innings this year. So rightoff the bat he gets some innings

Except we weren't up big, unless your definition of "big" means having a 3 run lead, which we had just obtained on the Paulsen HR.

Decker,Cole advanced to second base; Ricketts,Brayden advanced to third base.23

I think he was referring to game 1 of the doubleheader on Saturday. Bottom line, we didn't have a big lead when McDuffie pitched in either game.
Correct. G1 of Saturdays DH. May have jumped the gun claiming “big”…but it was a comfortable lead after the HR and we clearly had the momentum plus that essentially ran their pitcher. We got into their pen and ran away with it. Bottom line is (at that point in the game/series) I would have preferred a less experienced arm, with a really quick hook, in that situation and had McDuffie available later. We dodged a major bullet and stole that last game…and got the benefit of testing some unproven arms. It all worked out in the end.

As Tommy eluded above, Walkers season didn’t end in grand fashion last year. Need to get the confidence back up, he came in and got the job done. Probably will see right much if that this year.

Just listened to today’s podcast. Walker apparently missed some preseason work due to a blender incident and his thumb. Sounds like all is good, but he’s slightly behind. Lots of things like this affect the decisions that we don’t know about until after the fact.

my takeaways:

  • 17 Ks, 19 BBs for the weekend. that's a ~17% strikeout rate compared to last year's ~23% (2025 Diamond Heels had 333 BB, 482 K). Even though we've hit 2 dingers at a point where last year's team hadn't hit any, I still don't think I saw a ton of pop; most of our batted balls did not have the juice to reach the wall. If this team is going to be similar to last year's offensively and be more of a ~80 home run group than ~100, keeping the Ks down is going to be crucial. I really liked the plate discipline of this team when I saw them vs State and I continue to think it's a plus after this weekend. I don't expect to walk more than we strike out all season; that'd be absurd, but it's a great starting point.
  • The Boaz reports in the offseason were not lying, I thought that was the best he's ever looked. Location was better than it was last year and the cutter is getting him a lot more SAM. DeCaro's velo was up for a couple of innings but I'd like to see him hold it a little better, and while the curve was great and the change was improved the slider is still a little slurvy. I didn't see innings 3-8 of G3 so I can't say as much about Lynch other than that I saw a couple of good changeups and I feel like his sweeper is neutered a little bit when he throws it into righties instead of away from them. The three of them combined to allow 7 hits in 15 innings... even as I nitpick, truly it's only themselves that can really beat them.
  • Echoing everything that's been said about the BP. Seeing Flannery making some outs for the first time basically ever was awesome, his mix is different from basically anybody else's on staff and could make him a real weapon to contrast with most of his teammates. Glauber's clearly got awesome stuff, but I suppose we all got a little spoiled by how good McDuffie/Seagraves/Lynch looked in their debuts this time last year. I think he'll shove vs ECU now though, with those jitters out of the way.
  • Impressed with the defense from the newcomers. Hull looks like a natural in CF, Nicholson is more of an athlete than I expected at 3rd, Schaffner despite the 2 errors looks like an absolute eraser at short.
  • If the baseball gods were trying to give us one back after how last season ended, Game 3 of an opening-weekend series we already had won is not going to cut it.
