Murphy lost best rising 10th grade athlete in SMC, Rob Turner, to transfer to Rabun Gap this summer. Lost rising freshman Pinkerton, best JV lineman in the conference last year, also transferred to Georgia school this off-season. Two young kids but would of been difference makers on varsity this season. Really hurts em down the road though. The JV team at Murphy last year had a whole lot of potential as upperclassmen varsity group, ton of skill speed and raw but real big line., thats down the drain now thanks to transfer portal nature of modern high school athletics.
As far as returnees on varsity go had two that played and started last year decide not to come out this season. When team is already replacing a bunch of starters can't afford that. Everybody knows Stalcup and he is a stud but there's just not much around him in 11th and 12th grade classes. Support he gets this year is mostly gonna come from 10th graders. Sounds pessimistic and it is. Murphy just don't have depth and there's a couple real big holes on o-line and d-line going into the season,. gonna be the weakest Murphy line in a long time I'd figure and you don't win in this conference without a top line. Lot a people thought Murphy was gonna be way down last year but they had a big veteran line and big group of seniors,. that usually plays up. This year... small group of seniors and young/small line. Its gonna be a rebuilding year at Murphy I'd say.
