Glad to see Dr. Keenum be unequivocal about our support for international students.

I think this ICE policy is designed to pressure schools and universities into holding in person classes. Trump has been very vocal about it the need to full classrooms in the fall.

Sucks tens or hundred of thousands students were dragged into the middle of it though.

If you were very cynical, you would think this policy was designed to either help trump by ensuring more of the economy is opened up, or hurt democrats by crushing the finances of a lot of universities and depriving democrats of a lot of campaign donations.

Who are we protecting? We’re the country with all of the cases.

It has nothing to do with protecting anyone and everything to do with Trump trying to force universities to open.

On paper Trump has the upper hand due to the rules of the visas but I'm sure it'll drag through courts so long it won't matter anyway.

Students already here probably won't be impacted but those waiting to come in might be.

This is what I thought also but it's apparently incorrect. It appears the universities are being misleading to cover up the fact that they weren't proactive in accommodating their international students. THis is not a new policy but a longstanding policy. See here: https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/2012/07/know-rules-online-and-distance-learning-classes .

ICE gave an emergency waiver, and Congress didn't do anything to change the rules or to bless that waiver, so they are reasonably and appropriately going back to enforcing the law. The universities should have been lobbying hard for congress to address this. Not sure if they were and Congress was just uninterested, in which case it's Congress's fault, or if the university somehow didn't realize they'd lose one of their major cash cows if they didn't have in person classes, in which case shame on them for not understanding their business better.

Not to be contrarian but if learning is remote it kind of implies that it is 'remote'. You don't need to travel here to get on the internet. If it's so unsafe to just be on campus then it's too safe to travel right?

(of course I don't think it's unsafe for either)

Those kids pay in cash. No University can afford to piss away that revenue, particularly one with as many foreign students as we got.
