I didn’t participate in the game thread but read a few comments at half time - the “Simpson easy ready” comments in the first half were just absurd. He looked fine even in the first half - and then really played well for a very young guy in the 2nd

... besides Jersey Cam's ability to steal the basketball (whoa) is Derick Simpson's passing ability, whoa!!!!!! I thought he was a scoring 2. Tonight he played like a solid backup PG who sees the floor VERY well. Wow.
Going to be VERY hard to keep him off the floor IMHO. Arguably the fastest - and in control "fast"- player we've had in a long time (yes, faster/quicker than JY).

Hes not ready to take 7 shots in his first game in the first half. Trying to do too much..settle in first

He had really nice 2nd half..sweet jumper and sexy assist

Simpson might be the fastest guard we’ve had in a long time…. (Qualifying that since I’ve never seen Fast Eddie play…)

For a Frosh he was poised for his first game, overall…

Love Simpson’s game. There was at least two instances in the first half where Simpson got into the lane and had uncontested shots but instead attempted to make difficult passes that were unsuccessful. Thought at the time that he’s got to shoot it.
I don’t know about him being faster than JY. But as a freshman, he is very much in control which was not always the case with JY even as an upperclassman.

Everything looks improved except FT shooting. Which was weird since we looked ok against Fairfield.
I’m not going to worry about that too much yet. I think we were pretty jacked up tonight and didn’t focus as we should at the line. We need to take a breath there and take our time.

Exactly. The team was so jacked up. Virtually every missed shot during play and at the foul line was too long.

I saw a better defensive team than in past years, even without Caleb. Team is very quick and athletic, which is 90% of defense.

Too early to know anything about the offense, obviously

Watching the freshman tonight gave me similar vibes to going to games in that 2018-19 season and seeing the potential in the young ones Difference is, we got 6 guys already at a good level in the rotation with them.

I fear the games when the BTN officials call Cliff for two quick ones in the first three minutes. We will struggle then. He’s the key.

I was not super hot about Simpson when he was on the floor but he has lots of potential just needs to keep on working. Tonight I like the lineup of Paul, Cam, Cliff, Hyatt/Reiber, and Mag/Reiber.

Can't wait to see McConnell on the floor again.

Should be another great and exciting season.

Fun first game at the Trapezoid of Terror.. lol. Will be returning for a B10 game (Indiana or Purde?)

A lot of people saying he’s faster than Young have quickly forgotten what a blur JY was. It’s a nice debate to have though.
Yeah I kind of agree. Might give a slight nod to young but Simpson is already in more control. Lots to like about this kid!!!

Agree - Simpson definitely ready to be an impact player. He is a good shooter too - Simpson is exactly what we need!

Cam dominated the first 5:00 of the 2nd half like I’ve rarely seen before ar RU. Offense and defense even keeping rebounds alive that he couldn’t get.

Simpson is confident. He’s lightening quick but plays slow almost and I mean that in the most complementary way. Hes under control.

He's plenty fast and quick, but he's not faster/quicker than JY. Love his game, though, and he'll hopefully be a better distributor and shooter than JY.

my most surprising takeaway is that the ball doesnt stop anymore, we actually have some flow and quick passing and overall team speed has improved
That's what I was expecting so not surprising but good to see

If you are going back to Eddie, that’s a long time - some on here probably weren’t alive when he played for RU

A few of us last night all agreed he's faster/quicker than JY. I guess we'll agree to disagree.

He maybe twitchier/quicker in small spots. To me, where JY was the fastest Rutgers basketball player I've ever seen, was in a upcourt situation, end to end he was a blur and REALLY got up the court FAST. With the ball in his hands, end to end he blazed. We haven't seen enough of DS to say if he's on par with that, but in halfcourt penetration situations, moving with the ball, etc. DS looked VERY quick IMHO.

Our crew thought JY was just a touch faster/quicker, so we'll have to agree that you're wrong, lol - either way, it's a great "problem" to have...

One thing I noticed for this game at least our perimeter defenders did a good job of staying on their feet for head fakes and jump shots. It’s a pet peeve of mine perimeter defenders leaving their feet to try and block shots. We seem to commit a lot of fouls on 3s. Hopefully this is being remedied.
