Cuomo said it today and I researched it the best I could without conclusive results.... some of you guys can do a better job I'm sure. The quote: "If you go on a ventilator there is roughly only a 20% chance that you will come off the ventilator. The longer you are on the ventilator, the lower the chance that you come off,” he said.

I heard him say it.

So, sounded like 80 percent of those in NY that actually went on a ventilator, expired.

He's pretty close .. given the age and underlying illnesses of these folks it just seems to be a near death sentence of you are in the high risk group. That's what makes it so hard...

Yeah....you can't stay on one for long and expect to be ok. When my brother went on one a few years back his wife told me this is not good at all(she was a nurse). He never made it off it alive.

so at a 20% success rate, ventilators are valuable, but maybe not as much as the general public thinks.

It could be why there's such a shortage. People are going on them and staying on them for a really long time. I heard the biggest problem is that the lung damage is so severe that eventually even at 100% oxygen on a ventilator your blood cannot get enough oxygen in and carbon dioxide out. If someone figures out a way to reverse or stop the lung damage, whether or not they get the virus out, then the death rate should plummet.

My wife was on a vent for about 3 weeks in late 2008 following a stroke. The doctors told us then that the chances of survival after more than 21 days were very slim. She survived & recovered, but she had a lot of things favorable characteristics for recovery (young early 40's & otherwise healthy- no blood sugar, blood pressure issues, etc.

Have to wonder how much of that has nothing to do with the ventiltor and more to do with how sick people have to be to require one.

This virus cause Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. This basically starves all your vital organs of oxygen. If you're placed on a vent due to ARDS your chances of survival is 42% in the first 48 hrs. After 48 hrs your chances drop to well below 20%. Every time I keep hearing, "we need more vents" it aggravates me because of the perception. The media has everyone thinking it's the "life saving tool" & if put on one you'll be OK. Not true.... The last thing you want is to get bad enough to be placed on one. Most all cases can have permanent organ damage afterwards. I work in the medical profession & have already laid out if I get it, pull me off the vent after 48 hrs & give another a chance to live.

Apparently once you get to the "Cytokine storm" level, you are 17ed. Not sure if getting on a ventilator earlier would help that or not. But the numbers on how little difference ventilators seem to make have been out there I think since late last week. If 20% is little. Not sure how many of those could have potentially made it without the ventilators.

If that's true why the difference in death rate between countries that haven't been overwhelmed compared to countries that have? I was under the impression that the vent was really saving a ton of people....

This lines up with what I've seen and heard. It's one of the reasons there was the idea floated of universal DNR for vented patients. Hanging around on a vent for 2-3 weeks is not good. When I first started in healthcare, I did see a guy that was on a vent in full blown ARDs for a month that lived. But that's not the norm.

For me personally, I feel that if I went on a vent due to COVID, I would die. I have hypertension (controlled by medication), but that seems to be a risk factor that indicates poor outcomes. I'm healthy otherwise, but I've been really careful because of that. I'm terrified of being one of the poor souls that ends up on a vent with this thing.

As mentioned, going on the ventilator is bad. The scary thing behind not having enough vents is someone who may only require a couple days may not have one available. You can try and predict their ability to do well on the vent, but this virus seems to not discriminate as much if you are unlucky enough to get very sick from it. Getting a family to decide to withdraw care during a long, tenuous, grim vent course is an extremely taxing process for everyone involved. COVID is putting a lot of added pressure on an already stressful process. Add in the fact family can't visit the patient, and its a true nightmare.

Hopefully a resident SPS physician will chime in, but I don’t think that figure is specific to this condition from what i know. You go on a vent, it’s hard to get off. The machine is breathing for the body, and it’s not as simple as flipping off a switch to get someone’s body and brain to learn breathing again. Unfortunately

My son is an ICU nurse in NOLA. As of a few days ago, there had been no successful extubation of a COVID patient in their unit.

Regarding the number of ventilators in the country. And I’ll have to confirm this, but apparently the US Gov put in a large order for ventilators several years ago with a company called Newport, I’m sure with a situation like this in mind.

They were going to make affordable, smaller, more portable machines for such a crisis. In the middle of the deal, Covidien steps in and purchases Newport. Decides that designing a budget model vent might undercut their Cadillac version. I think the contract fell through. Since then, I know Medtronic (my old employer) bought Covidien for a gazillion dollars.
I heard or read that Medtronic has made the mfg plans for one of their ventilators open source in the past week, so anyone can make it...

My step-dad had heart surgery then aspirated damaging his lungs and developed ARDS, he went on a vent for a few days.....He eventually came off of it and got better after about 5 months in the hospital. He was 75 years old at the time. He is now 80, and I'm worried that he may catch this and not be able to make it if he has to go thru that again. Luckily, he doesn't get out much and lives by himself....Either way, I just don't trust other people to take the proper precautions.....

Most shocking I've heard is the new conspiracy theory that this isn't a virus but 5G networks

I have to think the number of people going on vents will go down with increased, quicker testing. It sounds like many of these presented and took tests which originally were taking 4-6 days to get results back, so now if we can get results back in 15 minutes to catch it early, and start any of the treatments like Hydroxychloroquine you can avoid most of these cases progressing, unless you doctors say differently.

Im not sure if someone were tested very early and were positive that they would start these drugs. Maybe they would, but right now, from what it sounds like they aren’t even testing people until they have the three major symptoms. You just get sent home until you have difficulty breathing.
Hopefully that changes soon.

They’re just now rolling out those quicker tests. It’s going to take a little while to get them going.
