Greetings from a Baylor guy!

I'm just curious what the general opinion is on Monty's performance so far in his first season. He seems to have drastically improved TU from last season. What's the view from the fans who actually attend the games?

There is a small contingent who complain about Montgomery being too conservative, and too vanilla in his play calling. They are the ones who want to see play calling similar to Gus Malzahn when he was our offensive coordinator. But most of those fans(there is only maybe 4 or 5 of them) find something to ***** about almost every game, and are very reactive fans.(If we lose everybody sucks.) The majority of fans are very happy to be one game away from bowl eligibility, and having already equaled our winning total from the last two years. Generally we can't wait for him to have a couple of three years recruiting under his belt, to see what he can do with the guys he recruited. He and his DC's have orchestrated some very successful position changes. Most notably a 6' 5" tight end, who is now a defensive line player. He has been dealt with a bunch of injuries. This could have been devastating with some other coaches, but he has handled it fairly well. Our cb's, ol, and wr's have been hit with injuries, but not as hard as our devastated rb crew, but he has found a way to plug the next guy in, and keep things chugging along reasonably well.

I agree with the above post. Monty is right where most people thought he would be. I personally thought he had the chance to pull one or two upsets this season... but I wasn't sure of it. He's definitely made a positive impact. I just hope it continues into the next couple of seasons.

Considering the absolute mess he stepped in, he's had a great year (minus the East Carolina game). He's more conservative with his play calling than I anticipated - but the program is on the rise. He inherited a disaster from his predecessor and he needs to upgrade the talent on both sides of the ball. I think he will me with us for at least 3 more years. I just hope the Athletic Director doesn't make the same mistake that Bubba did when he eventually leaves for a bigger opportunity.

He probably would have if the star of our offense hadn't gone down against Houston.(WR Keevan Lucas) We sure would have performed better against East Carolina. We'd probably have at least one more win, and have a better shot against Cincinnati this weekend.

Without Keevan 6-6, with Keevan, 7-5 or 8-4.

I think he has done a great job thus far. He inherited a ship that had sunk and is in the process of resurrecting that sunken ship. Play calling grew very conservative after Lucas was injured. He has his work cut out, however he seems to enjoy the challenge. Hurricane Monty has lead the way by infusing new energy into the program. AAC coaches picked us last with a likelihood of 2 victories this year, thus far we are at 5 and counting!

Monty doing a great job coaching players he never recruited while at Baylor. He has brought a new mentality and winning spirit to Tulsa. He inherited a great wide receiver corp and a QB with no confidences in his ability. He had question marks about his Offensive Line, RB corp and the entire defense. Now he have a team of hungry individuals who are playing inspired football. We are witnessing a team playing well with a group of underclassmen getting better every week. Monty should be AAC Coach of the Year.

I think Monty has done well. I think the playbook has been kept simple and quick because our O-line isn't exactly to the level of what he needs it to be to open things up yet. The play calling and there have been a couple of areas regarding clock management or game management we have questioned which happens to 1sr time HCs, but overall a good job. I like what he is doing recruiting addressing some of our pressing needs. Next year will be telling.

8-4 with Lucas? where do you get 2 more wins?
Wishfull thinking..optimus prime ! TU hopely can redshirt most of the next recruiting class, its extremely rare to get an impact player as a true freshman playing on the line. Look how Chad President has wasted a year of elgibility, he should have kept his redshirt.

I think Rowdy Frederick comes in and plays right away, beyond that no one can say.

Trent Dupy did it as a frosh and I believe Rowdy Fredrick has a great chance to play early and possibly start as Dupy did. Frederick is really talented.
Yup. It's not like we're going to ask him to bulk up lol. His playing time will be determined purely on how well he can execute the blocking scheme.

I think Monty has earned about an 86 grade or so. He's done very well with limited talent at most positions. I still wish he'd run more outside runs with jet sweeps and the like with our fast players like Louie. We have average talent and above average results for that talent. I get fanatical mainly when Dane does boneheaded things. He has to perfect to keep games close/winnable against good teams because our defensive backs are so so bad. There is no overcoming that talent gap and we need Dane to play at his best, which can be pretty good. So when he falters...we fall behind in scores quickly. I like Monty, was expecting a little more exciting play calling than 3 yard hitches and runs over center...but hopefully that changes as he recruits better athletes.

Pretty much agree with everyone. You are forced to be conservative if you like speed and depth. Sweeps work better if you are faster than the defenders, not so well if you are slower. I think most people are impressed with Monty and his staff. What we do need is a couple or more years of good tall fast recruits. But we could take an extremely fast and small running back. But they didn't judge Mikey Angelo when the ceiling was half painted.

What's most important is the fact that there's hope and optimism back in our football program. There hasn't been a single game this year where we haven't felt like we had a shot to win it during the coin toss, and even down a score or two. Last year we walked on to the field expecting to lose each game.

I guess my opinion isn't valid since I moved and couldn't "actually attend" a game in 2015. :-/

You've watched a bunch of games on TV BBjunkie, your opinion is a hell of a lot more valid than the sky is falling gang of fans.

Montgomery grades a heck of a lot better than 86 in my book. Somewhere in the low to mid 90's. Hey Sic em Baylor, if it's not obvious, a couple of the reactive fans moniker start with TUGrad0*. And they are being conservative in their remarks in this thread.

The last thing I'm going to say on this issue. Mid 90's with the team he had from last year's record of(10-3), is completely equal to what Montgomery is doing this year with the team whose record last year was (2-10). We're going to be 6-7 or 7-6 after the bowl game. Fuente has already almost equaled his loss record from last year. Memphis lost to Navy & Houston, in case u haven't kept up.

So salty. So derogatory. 5 wins is a 95 huh? Do they give out ribbons for finishing in the bottom half of the conference too? Lordy, he's done well with what he was given, but dude still has some growing to do. If he's already a 95, we're screwed.

75. They've had to scheme around some glaring weaknesses. Most of those decisions are good, some are a little too conservative for my taste, but my house payment isn't on the line like the coaching staff.

Some posters forget that Kragthorpe did about the same with less to work with and made similar decisions about when and how to be a little fundamentally unsound. Gus also brought players in his first year that matched his system and we're ready to play.

No complaints. I've been high on the hire since the outset, thought Top 25 this year was within the team's grasp, and they scared the crap out of Sooner fans in Norman.

We're right where we should be As long as the record improves by at least one additional win from the year before(7-5. 8-4. 9-3...). over the next two or three years, Montgomery will keep his grading where it is right now. I would actually grade him at 93 or 94%, but it's all pretty subjective. If we were performing like Memphis & Temple it would be a 97%. Like Houston or Navy, a 100%. Ratings are all relative to where we were the year before.

Let's look at actual on field accomplishments...
He inherited one of the worst defenses in the nation. Though the defense may be long on heart, they are short on talent and athleticism.
The offense had 2 proven D-1 players Lucas and Garrett and Evans who is either hot or cold. He simplified the blocking scheme that has proved to be very successful...
This team was voted last for a reason in the AAC...
Most coaches thought a 2-3 win season was a sure bet...
Hurricane Monty and staff have installed a great amount of confidence and enthusiasm in the team. Lucas got injured and Floyd, Atkinson, and Hobbs have all stepped up. They are playing like a team!
Monty promised fast, physical, and fun football and he has delivered--bigtime!
The team is 5-5 and has a great opportunity to become bowl eligible after 2 seasons where we totaled 5 wins.
Though we all hoped for a 6 win season at the start of the year, we all knew that Monty and staff would have to pull off a few miracles to accomplish that goal. Well miracles do happen...
And yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus!!!

I've got a feeling that Robert Revels will not red-shirt, especially with Trent Martin graduating. This guy looks like a beast. Khari Harding might play the middle while Petera Wilson probably moves outside. TU Football: 1st,last,always!

Just a little history, but as I remember, Glenn Dobb's teams were very similar in run to pass ratio. A lot of runs, but the biggest plays were the passes of course. You can't be one dimensional - and the opponent needs to stop the run first - if they don't, they're in trouble because a hand off is an easier completion than a pass.

It's hard to win games when your defense can't stop a beach ball from getting by them. Our offense has given us more than enough points every game to win. Last year we couldn't score on offense, so I think Monty deserves high praise for finding ways to instill confidence in the same players--who last year, couldn't seemingly score very often.

That is unless of course that pass is from Rhome to Twilley...

Monty made some key moves to improve the team. Tulsa make it to 6 wins he should be considered for AAC Coach of the Year.
Stupid trying to grade. There are some things he has done really well and some things he is learning as he goes.

AAC Coach of the Year will be Ken N (Navy) or Hermann in Houston...whoever wins that game.

Solid "B"... Nice turnaround but the offense hasn't shown the Baylor explosiveness we were promised. Chad President resembles a certain recruit we stole from Michigan. The defense still can't tackle as well as an Indian Nations team. But we are in a good position to finish .500 which is 2 games ahead of my prediction. So.. Solid B with lots of potential.

Unless Trent Martin decides he won't play next year, he has one remaining year of eligibility. He would be a sixth year senior.
