In the middle of a week long trip in Montana and the family and I are ready to move here. Awesome country up here....

I head up next week with my wife and kids (Bozeman, Big Sky, Ennis, and Jackson Hole)
Have dinner at the Mural room at Jackson Lake Lodge or at least a samich at the grill on the viewing platform.
Every time I hear somone say they think they may move to Montana, I cannot help but think of this!

Just got back from a week there and it is indeed awesome. What parts are you visiting? It's a huge state.
Many people who love it during the summers can't handle the winters. They are brutal but if you are good with tough and long winters, it can be a great residential state. Another problem is that the real estate market is wildly inflated and short supplied in the most popular locales.
Vacationing somewhere can give false visions.

Advice I've heard on a big move is to rent a house for a full year before you decide to make your move more permanent.
I always dreamed of living in Wyoming but realized that would take the fun out of visiting. I’m 10 minutes from a state park that gets 1.5 million visitors per year and I never go anymore because I can see it from my deck.

I loved the Spearfish SD area a few years back and jokingly have looked for jobs there , but after visiting there this winter I think il pass. Turns out the hipster pothead fresh brewed acorn coffe ain’t really my scene. I think I’d be a bad fit culturally for that area.

My only experience in Spearfish was an attempt at a fat bike ride on the snow mobile trails I was pretty excited about after a ton of recon leading up to it. Nite ride...full lights...But in the short distance I drove from the town itself, up to where I tried to unload (Ski Hill Rd)??? to ride.... the snowfall difference was at least 10-12"... got hosed on that deal...made worse by that being the only night I was going to be there. Totally sucked. I so want to go back and stay in one of the many huts they have in their forests, that are supposed to he stocked with firewood.
Covid years have destroyed JH, Grand Teton National Park… everyone decided they wanted to go camping at the same time.
If I were to move out of Nebraska, and assuming I'm not some rich **** who can have a summer and winter house, I'd probably not choose somewhere with worse winters. That being said, I doubt I'll ever move very far, if ever.

Those campgrounds were always full before COVID though too. Once school lets out Yellowstone and the Tetons are full all summer. It’s still great.
Best to visit Yellowstone in early September. Crowds go down and wildlife come down from higher elevations.
To consider moving to Montana full-time, you probably want to make sure you really enjoy outdoor activities - including winter outdoor activities. As others have posted, MT winters are not for the faint of heart, and not all mountain winter weather is the same. Montana does not get anywhere close to the number of sunny, bluebird winter days that Colorado mountains do. If you ski in MT you bring your low-light goggle lenses cuz you're gonna need them.
And once you are there, be sure to complain about everyone else moving in and ruining it, just like we do in Colorado....

Julie, I don't think Missoula and Flathead Lake area are any colder than where you and I live. Maybe a little, but not much. The eastside of the continental divide like Bozeman gets a lot colder.Make sure you spend a winter there before you pack your bags!
It’s a neat area, I love deadwood and other non tourist things the black hills offers, but Spearfish was just absolutely loaded with pot heads and I’m definitely Clint Eastwood Gran Torino when it comes to loser druggys, guess il stick to my cow pasture life.
There were definitely many beautiful parts to the Black Hills. We drove some highways that had so much scenery and animals it was like going on a safari. But we (2 couples from Texas) absolutely were blown away by the badlands.
We’ve got friends who do the sturgis deal, but we are lakes and Mr Rushmore and clear mountain streams and little warm puppies types. It was definitely a worth it trip.
