84) Pittsburgh Steelers: Tyler Smith, OT, Tulsa​

The Steelers weren’t getting out of the first three rounds without one offensive lineman as they grab Tyler Smith from Tulsa. Smith is fundamentally sound, but he can work on his balance and hand usage.

I haven’t seen a mock draft that includes Josh Johnson.

Whoever did the mock seems to not see the same things as Jerry. Jerry O says Tyler has some deficiencies in fundamentals which led to a few holding calls this season but says they are things that can be coached out of kids. What he has going for him are good, quick feet, and a "punch" that stops many rushers in their tracks. He mentioned his versatility to play inside or out but really sees him as a RT.

As for Chris Paul, his intellect, a superior athletic ability and flex, and great physical tools are all there he just needs to work on quicker feet and not lunging out in pass pro that can get him off balance.

He said he thinks both have the ability to be in the league for a long time.

I hope both Smith & Paul both make it in the NFL & I respect Jerry O’s opinion greatly. Jerry knows offense line play much better than I do. That’s the good part of this story.

The bad part is that I watched all the games TU played with these guys and I never thought we had an NFL level o-line. Usually having 2 NFL level players on your offensive line would signal a very good era of TU football. We apparently failed to coach up our o-line to their abilities.

I'm thinking more and more it's the scheme. Our guys are great in 1 v 1 straight up situations. They didn't do so well vs stunts or an extra rusher coming through a gap that wasn't the A gap and the RB picking the guy up. As a group the communication and understanding of what you needed to do and hope the next guy did the right thing just seems to be lacking. I don't think its the individual ability or technique at all or the coaches. I mean, Willie Wright was a defensive lineman that Monty converted to OL and he's in the NFL. I've blasted Chris Paul because there were many times he got outflanked on the rush after he crashed down to pick up another rusher. After watching him in Senior Bowl drills where he dominated guys 1 v 1 in blocking drills, it's not technique. Bloesch and Hanson did a good job of developing the skills. Our offensive scheme where everything is a zone block and you never know exactly where the play is going puts our OL at an extreme disadvantage.

I think Joe Burrow needs some holding calls vs getting the crap beat out of him.
