Well aware of this. But that was a decision the Mets made to go over slot to get a guy that had fallen to them. It was a common strategy they used under that regime. It's still a bit of a blow to fall from 30 to 53, which is what he did. The Mets just wanted to make sure they got him signed (and at the end of the day, he didn't fall THAT far).

The Dodgers were also not ever going to have the slot money needed to sign him in 2018 at that pick number. They rolled the dice to see if he would turn down about $1.8 - 2 million, and he did. Dodgers overdrafted him and the Mets underdrafted and overpaid. His stock the whole time was that of an early 2nd rounder, and didn’t really move at all.

Ginn got way more money in the 2nd round with the Mets than he was ever offered from the Dodgers in the 1st round in 2018. He came to State, had the absolute worst case scenario for his college career happen (Tommy John at the beginning of his draft eligible season), and still got more money at the end. All he was out was 2 years minor league salary…$150k or so at best…plus maybe some marginal amount of interest earned on what he would have invested from the 2019 bonus. And now he’s healthy and off to a good start in A ball.

I agree that he’s the exception and not the rule, but he’s also not a great example of the perils of choosing college over the pros. Things turned out very well for him in spite of some daunting circumstances.

Interesting that Hoglund still went as high as he did when he was a mid-season TJ casualty. Seems a pretty risky draft pick in the first round.

He was projected top 10 before injury, I think. TJ doesn't scare teams like it used to

Kind of wild that a MLB team would prefer Hoglund with TJ surgery over Nikhazy. I know MLB are looking for specific things but Nikhazy shut down essentially every college team he faced. He was just so good at hiding the ball at his release and locating. Almost reminded me of Tom Glavine.
