I don't have any info but not sure why it would have any impact. There are three full time assistant slots on every staff so why not fill one of them with a hungry, Pittsburgh native and former Pitt assistant who just happens to be the coach of a loaded AAU team?

on twitter, a lot of Pitt fans were hoping for both directly following the Capel hire, with a huge divide between those that felt Knight would consider because he loves Pitt and those saying he wouldn't because they've ignored him in the last several coaching searches.

It may matter in terms of who is hired as the guy in that #1 Assistant spot.

Knight may not want to move unless he is recognized as the Number 1 Assistant...at Rutgers he is in the 3rd spot.

At Rutgers...I think Hobbs is the top assistant and offensive coach, Young is the defensive /Big Man coach and Knight handles the guards.

2nd and recruiting coordinator. Makes 300,000 which is the same as Karl Hobbs.

I was thinking more in terms of pure coaching responsibilities. Am I correct in saying Hobbs handles the offense, Young handles defense/big men and Knight handles the guards only?

So if Pikiell has an offensive issue he consults with Hobbs and Then Young for defensive issues. Of course Knight gets premium pay because of his ties to NJ recruiting.

Ah I forgot recruiting is not a responsibility. Particularly organizing it for the staff.

No need to be a PITA.

We just view things differently. As I mentioned Knight gets the premium pay for recruiting and because getting him back to Jersey was vital for Pikiell.

I'm really not trying to be a PITA. I know a lot of this is message board chatter, but when you don't say that you are stating your opinion, narratives that aren't true begin to form around here. There's a big difference between saying "I think he's a number 3" or the 3rd best assistant than what you said. He gets paid as much as the Associate Head coach. He's not the number 3 guy on the staff. If Knight leaves, just like if Young or Hobbs leaves, it'll hurt. That's my point. We should be debating facts, not trying to create false narratives.

I can only say this once....Knight is the unofficial #1 assistant at RU.....lead recruiter, lead everything....Hobbs is the most experienced with understanding what Pike needs and on gameplans , but #1 on title only.....Jay Young is the engine on the defense/bigs and game planning...

Knight and Hobbs earn a littlemore than Young I believe, but they are all well compensated........I don't know where this item on Knight being 3rd keeps coming up, it's way out of bounds.........I can assure you, there really isn't a 1-2-3 with this staff anyway, but on pecking order, Knight is definitely not 3rd....It's Knight 1, Young 1A and Hobbs 1B....

Watch they get both and throw in Gary Waters as the third coach. Then they go to the sweet sixteen next year. Because that would be so Rutgers.

Hobbs and Knight make A LOT more than Young. Below is their ranking within the Rutgers Athletic Dept. Full link to Keith Sargeant's NJ.com article from a couple of weeks ago is below.

8. Karl Hobbs (men's basketball assistant)
Hobbs, the former George Washington head coach who is Pikiell's top bench coach, earned $318,238 in 2017.

9. Brandin Knight (men's basketball assistant)
Knight, who just completed his second season on Pikiell's staff, earned $299,425 in 2017.

16. Jay Young (men's basketball assistant)
Young, who joined the Rutgers staff after previously working under Pikiell at Stony Brook, earned $207,116 in 2017.

That line of reasoning made my head hurt. What does lead everything mean? Unofficial #1 ? Especially, when you go on to say that Hobbs and Young do all the vital Gameplanning and the NJ dot com story says Hobbs is the Top Bench coach ?

The money ranking is important, Knight was definitely in a great bargaining position and used it get a lot of money because a top NJ native and Jersey recruiter on the staff was coveted...as opposed to Young, who was without a job when he got hired.

You say Knight is 1, the other guy says Knight is 2 based on salary and I say based on experience that Knight is 3 and the easiest to replace with another top recruiter. But, keeping all 3 is VERY important right now.

We can disagree. End of conversation.

Saint Peter’s University job opened up today after John Dunne unexpectedly leaves for Marist job. Rice’s name was briefly brought up today but hearing Shaneen Holloway as leader for the job with current assistant Matt Henry.

UConn made a splash hire...lured Kimani Young from Minnesota as the #1, #2 or #3 assistant...lol

Recruiting should be the most important responsibility for at least one assistant coach and have high priority with the other two .The head coach is supposed to the closer on recruiting.Rutgers needs definite improvement in recruiting especially in attracting shooters/scorers.Without scorers defense and rebounding won't put wins on the score board.

Continuing the conversation...

How can you say Knight would be easy to replace with another top recruiter?

You sound like you don’t value Knight by that comment, and you calling him #3.

I think each of the 3 is very valuable and don’t like the 1,2,3 labels.
Hawk’s approach is much better.

"Easiest to replace" ....not easy to replace. Those are two very different things. I"very said multiple times that we need to keep them all.

No offense to him, but, Hawks last comment made very little sense...especially Knight being #1 Everything. Young runs the defense, Hobbs is the top Bench Coach

It’s easy to see that Pike, Knight, and hobbs ALL recruit. Knight is the Recruiting coordinator on top of recruiting and on top of coaching the guards.
