64 is unrealistic. 8 would be a dramatic adjustment from a progress standpoint with the NCAA... Condoleza Rice has NO DAMN BUSINESS in selecting who gets to play for a playoff seat. Politics has become starkly inbred into college football and unless you're an Alabama or Ohio State fan, chances are you hate it too.

I have always been skeptical that the money conferences would quash any real playoff BUT the crashing TV ratings and attendance might get them to rethink things. The networks might even push for it eventually.

Here's my concern: a 32 team playoff means 30 playoff games. Currently there are 40 bowls. While more bowls could definitely be created, it seems almost certain that some existing bowls would be turned into playoff bowls - leaving more teams out. Thereby increasing revenue, exposure, and practice time for the haves and leaving more have nots on the outside looking in. As a practical matter, the "haves" would get the nod. not too mention travel issues if they were neutral site games anyway (getting a basketball team across the country on short notice is one thing, an entire football team and semis full of equipment is another).

If the first round were a home-hosted game, it would make that less of a problem, make travel 50% easier (and there would have be to considerations in seeding also), and guarantee a revenue stream (50% ticket allotments, opening up after ~3 days of sale or something). While it would hinder the feel of the first round, we'd be left with a 16 team neutral playoff that would only really require 8 additional games (since we already have a 4 team playoff). That's seems more doable.

Best part - more US vs. THEM matchups. The P5 couldn't just contract bowls with other P5 to avoid losses.

32 is almost too much as well. That's 5 weeks of playoff games. I've always felt 16 was the ideal number. 11 conference champions, 5 at large. I don't care if the Sun Belt champ gets run over by Bama in the 1st round, it's fair. I've always felt the TCU/Boise teams that made the NY6 games had a chance to beat the top teams but were never given the opportunity.

Completely agree. CFB bowl games are my primary mechanism for averting boredom during the holidays when I'm stuck at the folks house. If they weren't just one-offs and had playoff implications, the ratings would skyrocket.

I can only recall a few where that was allowed to happen. The time Boise beat Oklahoma at the fiesta bowl in 200x was such a big deal, it became the boon to their program's prestige for the past 10+ years.

And the only reason Chris Peterson left Boise was because he knew the system is rigged against a G5 team ever being allowed to play for a national championship. TCU played well in their game, UCF beat Baylor more recently, and of course there was Houston 2 years ago. USF and UCF might be those teams this year and likely the only loss either one of them might get this year is when they play each other.
