I’m a fan of Mickey he is a proven coach and recruiter.

My biggest concern is how are we going to make room for a full time special teams coach? The only real options are for Beckton to coach WR/TE, Frost to coach QB’s, or for Dawson to be gone and for Chinander to coach OLB’s. To me, the bets of those options is for Beckton to coach WR and TE’a, but that would seem to be off the table if Mickey is hired. So you are down to hiring an OC that doesn’t coach QB’s and let Grist do it, or get rid of Dawson.

So Dawson was coaching special teams with the OLB’s..

1) When you have to decide between two punters you have none.
2) Couldn’t find a competent FG kicker

These weren’t Dawson fault but punting to the wrong side of the field (MSU game) and not getting lined up right or calling a timeout on the blocked punt Friday Dawson has to take some responsibility along with SF on this..

Don’t know what SF has in mind but he better get this fixed ASAP this spring..

Dawson needs out of the ST role ASAP and we need an ace ST coach doing it full time. But I do like Dawson as OLB coach. Is ability to coach both LB and DE positions is huge in our defense.

Let frost coach Qb. Mickey could certainly help there too.
Who ever gets hired to be offensive coordinator should be coaching the QB..

Have no problem with SF helping out coaching QB, but he has other responsibility’s he needs to attend too..

have frost just as a figure head...no I repeat no play calling or coaching by him.
the dc and new oc can decide how best to rebuild the special teams ground up.

The OLB have improved under Dawson. ST have been horrible I'll give you that, but OLB have been much better in my eyes

I agree. I hoped to get a ST coach and keep Dawson, but there are only a couple ways to do it.

We won’t need a QB’s coach..like I posted who ever is the OC is the QB coach SF needs to hire a special teams coach unless he thinks he can accomplish coaching ST’s..

Do most programs that run a 3-4 base have separate inside and outside LB coaches?

I just looked at a few. They all seem to have two, but the DC is one.

Alabama has two, but their DC coaches the ILB.

Georgia has two, but their DC coaches OLB.

Oregon has two, but their DC cosches OLB.

Baylor has two, but their DC coaches ILB.

Well, that depends. Does Dawson actually spend a significant amount of time with the nickel position, or does Domann practice with the DB's? Besides Domann, the OLB's are mediocre at best.

I would want to get as much outside input on the offensive side as possible, and we also desperately need a ST coach because Frost is completely incompetent in this area. To me, that means the easy choice is to get rid of Dawson.

That still will not work as you only get 10 assistants

OC/QB
OL
WR
TE
RB

DC
DL
ILB
OLB
DB

Wonder if Ruud could/would move to front office or ST and have Chin take over mlb
perhaps, but a risk...any tinkering with the defense, might be unorthodox (wrong headed) in the principle if it works don't fix it. changing the qb coach to special teams coach...and having the qb hand off to the rb more seems to be the most logical/reasonable fix. the value of having a qb coach seems to be the most questionable, and the need for a special teams coach the most urgent.

out former qb coach was pulling in around 300 grand per year, so we dump the qb coach position, and up the new special teams coach to about 1 million...seeing that special teams is 1/3rd of the game, this should be a no brainer. field position is always vital. and any points added to the scoreboard (via field goal or extra point) increases the odds of victory, tremendously.

I don't agree. With the QBs we have next year (this includes Torres) we need a OC who was a QB himself, or has a record of developing QBs. Haarberg and Torres have very strong arms and need the proper coaching to realize their potential as passers. Smothers to be a dynamic dual treat QB, needs someone to help him improve his passing also.
Don't worry about the option, Frost can pitch in there (no pun intended) as a coach.

I should have said we need a coach who was an excellent passer himself like Graham Harrel, not a former option QB.

If we are going to keep a separate QB coach then the OC has to also coach the WRs as the last 2 have. This also does not allow you to hire a separate special teams coach unless you terminate one of the current assistants
