Takeaways...

Martelli is experienced, knows what he's doing, not Howard and will be more defensive minded.

Johns has not been good this year. Does he seize the opportunity and step up and play better like last year?

Nothing too groundbreaking. Interesting tidbit to me was about Martelli being more defensive minded and coaching the team how he feels not trying to be Howard. Wonder if we some unexpected lineup combinations and what his strategy will be to stop Paul

Johns scored 20 against us 2 years ago.

I feel worse about this game then I did before the fight. Really wish Howard wouldn’t have slapped that Wisconsin coach.
Agree with you. I think that was the game at MSG when Montez Mathis was the only player who played well …and we doubled Xavier Simpson only to have him dice us up.

Meh. Johns isn't going to give them more than Diabate. He had 15 last time we played them, and we still won by 8. And we're a markedly better team today. Michigan is better too, but ironically that's because Diabate has developed and he isn't playing.

That's bc you love to worry.

Would you feel better about this game if Pike Cliff and Mag were all suspended? Would you think that was to our advantage?

Of course not

Exactly. Michigan beat Iowa bc Diabate has 28 points and missed 3 shots

Pike is good. Howard is a recruiter.

Diabate out gets replaced by a guy who scored 20 against us on the bench

Cliff out means………..
Paul out means……….

Johns isn't even playing 10 minutes a game for a team that's 14-11. Would Michigan be worried if Geo was out because Hyatt had 13 and 10 in the NCAA tournament game?

You guys realize what is going to happen….we lose this game, we lose at home to Wisconsin.

things start to look bleak and doubters creep in and what happens next……..
We blow Indiana out at their place and we beat PSU decisively

the script has already been writen
This is a classic Rutgers script, but I honestly believe this is a different team. Tough hard game tonight but I'll be very surprised if we don't win this one.

Johns hasn't even scored in 3 games and the game before that when he last did he was 1-4.

Michigan board all saying he's been really bad this year. Could he have a big game? Sure. Is Diabate a better more difficult matchup? 100%

Michigan has no depth now on the front line. No shot blocking. These losses hurt them big time. Williams is 6th man recently and they don't play a deep rotation.

These are all positives. They are a less talented team with Diabate and Williams. That's a good thing not a bad thing

Old team yes. New team no.

I'm gonna call Andy Katz and have him swing the bus over to the FIG residence

Johns is soft and will now be expected to guard Harper. Johns is a worse defender and rebounder. This is a good thing

I recall that game too, but it was a real outlier for Johns. He also scored only 1 point against us as a starter in another game. And, he has been no where near a 20-point scorer anytime in his career. Hopefully he plays to his very pedestrian average.

Regarding Martelli as acting HC. He's been with the program and likely already has his footprints in the schemes. He's not going to re-engineer the team's schematics in 2 days since the fight. He may be a better game-day tactician than Howard, but any significant impact would likely require changing schemes or rotations. Again - not sure how a team with only 2 workout days would be able to do either.

If he comes up with a good scheme to stop Paul, that would be impressive, but would he not give Howard his same thoughts on what to do if he wasn't suspended?

Subs and TOs maybe... he might already handle that though as knight handles rotations here

Funny - but at this point it’s TBD whether it’s actually old team / new team or we’re simply one flowing team that consistently plays up and down to competition and then steps up when backed against a wall.

The correlation currently points to the latter until our guys prove otherwise. Green just described the typical trajectory to a T. Can we break the pattern in Michigan tonight?

Punches, slaps, insults aside we have to play michigan…. Lace ‘em up, get it done, and forget about the nonsense we all talk about. I’m sure Howard and Diabate are the last thing Pike and the team are thinking about. Beat who is in front of you is the mindset.

As RU fans we’ve been conditioned to expect a let down, however I believe that pattern was broken for this year with our win at Wisconsin (as part of our 4 consecutive wins over ranked teams).

Even the loss at Purdue convinced me that we are a very good team, capable of beating good teams on the road, more so than at any other time in recent memory.

I love how Martelli is suddenly the Wizard of West Philly.

He’s a solid coach. That’s true.

But it’s disruptive and not a net positive for them.

Pattern was already broken. We would not have won 4 in a row against ranked teams in previous pattern. Would have lost after 2 or 3

5 and a half straight games of good bball too

Old style thinking saying we played good against Purdue. That’s the way old Rutgers would think. No?

is that the way Rutgers basketball plays defense? I think not.

We did play well at Purdue. Really just a poor stretch to end the half after the Cliff T and q slow start to second.

Top 5 team, at a more hostile arena, edey Williams Ivey

Mich missing their coach and 2 good players

We keep playing like we have been playing and we should win by double digits. We can still win this with our B game in a closer game

I'm confident the Rutgers of the past 5 games will get the W tonight. If the Rutgers of the season before that shows up then anything is possible.
