The Menchville Monarchs scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning for an 8-7 comeback win over Newport News rival Denbigh Patriots.
The Monarchs undefeated start was in jeopardy heading into the seventh inning. Sophomore Kyle Martin singled with one out and Connor McCarthy walked to put the game-winning run on base. The next batter, Richard Marstellar, doubled down the 3rd base line scoring the runner on 2nd base to tie the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jaret West hit a grounder to second which appeared to be the final out but the throw went past the 1st baseman scoring McCarthy from 3rd base for the winning run.
Menchville sophomore Riley Sweeney relieved Ryan Webster and held Denbigh scoreless the rest of the game while striking out six batters in three innings to earn the win.
Both teams scored two runs in the 1st inning with Shane Arceo scoring after a single and passed ball for Denbigh and McCarthy also scoring after a double for Menchville.
Webster had an RBI double for Menchville in the 3rd and a popup by catcher Clinton Stroble gave Menchville a 4-2 lead. Denbigh answered with four runs in the fourth. The big blow was a 2-run double by Matt Arceo. Ryan Rhodes and Shane Arceo walked in two runs.
Adam Gately led off the 5th inning with a homerun to right center to give the Patriots a 7-5 lead.
