With the tournament looming I kind of miss them going after each other like an unhappy husband and wife. McGuire was a clown but I enjoyed him and Packer turned out to be a real quirky guy. Just like with anything else they weren't everyone's cup of tea but they are a part of the history of college hoops from a time when our choices of who to dial into were limited

Loved ‘em both. Packer has Bethlehem PA roots. His father Tony was head coach at Lehigh for 16 years.

Back from SC for a few days---hope all are well.

Loved both of these guys-----along with Dick Enberg

During Football season at ND they bring in a Guest Host once or twice a year for the Friday Night Pep Rally and one time it was Al McGuire.

It was a USC game back in the 80's which is usually a big deal.

The students by the stage were busting his balls when he was introduced and he looked at them and said.

" Calm down-----I'll go back to Marquette and start a football program and really kick your *** ".

I always liked packer . I remember McGuire calling a Syracuse elite 8 tournament game in the 90s drunk or sick . It was bad

Didn’t like Packer.. He gave too much credit to the coaches whenever a player made a great play. I always got the impression that he thought he was bigger than the game.

I still remember packer had a great line during a Villanova tournament game “Kerry kittles is good at stealing things.” This was the same year kittles got in trouble for stealing phone cards or something.
He also told female students at duke that they were doing a man’s job .
There was no love loss between packer and John Thompson
