This kid is starting to show why he was such a highly regarded recruit. He will eventually be our go to guy

He’s the only quick twitch guy we have. He’s an athlete and will really turn into quite a player if he can become a better shooter. Really like what I’ve seen the last 2 games

If he starts making his threes, watch out (1-3 today). Otherwise 7-11 for 16 points and stellar D to go with 4 rebounds. And still maturing.

He plays hardest and toughest against good competition. He seems to glide out there too.

There is one guy in this thread who, after a few games early in the season said...." I don't think Mathis is ready for Big 10 competition". [jumpingsmile][jumpingsmile][jumpingsmile].

I think he knows who he is.

To be fair whoever it was wasn't alone. There was at least 1 entire thread after game 1 or 2 questioning whether Pike had wasted a scholarship on him.

You're wrong - we were in a drought in the half court offense and I don't know if we make a basket in the half court if we wait - Mathis drove it to the hoop and put it up he was feeling it ... I love those shots
Fair point, agreed

Step out game for Mathis. Huge. Really coming into his own with suffocating defense, slashing offense, an occasional jumper and the kind of snarling competitive attitude we haven't seen around here in a long time. Totally different players, but his leave-it-all-on-the-floor attitude reminds me of Rob Hodgson.

Half of you guys were bitching about him 5 games in, while also predicting Caleb McConnell to transfer and Shaq Carter as a bust recruit.

Maybe think about that when you jump in the Peter Kiss thread or ***** about his shot selection today late in an upset of a top-16 team.

Sometimes the worst fan base in the world.

Yup. Our fan base writes everyone off in minimal sample sizes.

Mathis is a DOG. Just needed to center himself and let his game come to him. Caleb is a solid back-up pg. Carter, well hes a ******** baller. Kiss i think in spurts will be beneficial to the team as well.

Fan base needs to support. Pike has things moving in the right direction. There WILL be set back, there WILL be games like UMD where we look at it and say WTF. But this is all headed in a positive direction and out the basement. Enjoy winning against #16 boys. Onto Minny.

Those are tough shots but the type of shots Mathis excells at. I'd rather have him taking those over outside jumpers. He will be consistently making tough shots like that and drawing fouls on those plays his whole Rutgers tenure

I thought the last shot by Mathis was much needed, not just because it went in. We needed him to take it to the hole. And for the record it was not a wild lucky shot. He knew what he was doing and he gave it a soft touch that allowed it to find the bottom of the net. Kudos to him all around.

It was really a small number of people questioning Mathis. Anyone with eyes saw the early body language issue which he addressed and remedied but only a few questioning his talent from what I remember.

McConnell I was one of the veryyy few who wasn't concerned. Board jumped alllll over him right away. He just looked timid but he was a true freshman trying to run point... and that was it.

Carter just wasn't playing which was confusing as to why people just assumed he wasn't good. He showed promise always just wasn't getting in the game. He earned more minutes earlier but he's getting it now and should continue to earn more. He is our best offensive threat down low.

Most Freshmen, unless they are superstar one-and-dones, take a while to improve. Sam Dekker averaged 4 points his freshman year, became an All-American, and is now a solid NBA player. Frank Kaminsky averaged 2 as a freshman and just 4 as a soph, jumping to 13 and 18 his last two years, and is a rotation player in the NBA. Think some of our freshmen are coming along, playing hard and making an impact. Got to get the others going.

It is one of the reasons I visit the board less and less. Good news is we just beat the #16 team in the country with our leading scorer getting hurt after playing just 7 minutes. Sometimes just sitting back and enjoying your team/season is the best thing to do.

I said the same thing at the game. Obviously it’s best that it went in but I love that he wanted the ball in a big spot and drove decisively. He’s a big time player. Going to be growing pains but it’s there.

My favorite play of his in last couple minutes was crashing boards after defending the 3 which I believe led to the last offensive possession where Baker made the shot. He surprised the OSU player who though he had position down low. I think it was Mathis who even deflected it out to another RU player

This kid is so similar to danthay Jones

Heck....this was like jones break out game on big Monday where he went for 20 in upset win over nationally ranked Syracuse...as a frosh

Mathis gets his points the right way...and will make teams have to account for him

You have no idea on what that means to bakers game ...potentially huge

We have our slasher to the basket. He will drive and challenge. I love that so much more than the modern game of taking 3's all game.

Those morons should be called out for public ridicule. A college career isn’t defined by the first two games.

This board is only semi-readable after wins. The rest of the time it’s miserable, same with football, except that’s 100% depressing, even in the off-season.

Montez was great. Such a warrior. Gets better game by game. And is now finishing at the rac. We don't win this game without Montez. Love his game, toughness and demeanor.
