Yes indeed. Was in his shorts all night.
Yes, he was. Almost overlooked but I was focused on watching his D. It was stellar.
He was terrific. Now he is too talented to be shooting 59% from the charity stripe. He needs to shoot thousands of FT's in the off season and get that up to 70%.
I think he will be spending a lot of late nights in the new Practice Facility this summer shooting FTs and also threes.
He is learning his game. Less 3s and more taking it to the hoop.
Magoo, good point. I hope someone can work with him on that shot, because he's too talented not to shoot at least 70% from the FT line.
On one of his breakaway dunks, as soon as he dunked the ball, Montez landed and SPRINTED back to cover Bohanon. He didn’t posture. He didn’t celebrate. He sprinted back to cover his man. That kind of stuff is often missed or excused, but I saw it and I really appreciate his hustle and his discipline. And he is a freshman.

And one of the reasons he will remain a starter next year.....his defense and hustle....in addition to his ability to get into the lane.
I would like to see Mathis develop a jump shot off the dribble to expand his offensive game.
Just want to second... err... tenth? this. Played a stunning game on defense. And I think it's worth noting that he seems to have earned the respect of the refs as well, as Bohannon gets a lot of calls and Iowa in general looks for contact and gets calls, today was no exception, but when Mathis played good defense without fouling the refs swallowed the whistle.
He'll be in the new Practice Facility all day, every day this summer.
I noticed that too. I was just amazed and impressed that he had the presence of mind to do that after the big breakaway dunk. Too often kids want to flex or strut after a big play, and they wind up giving up a big play the other way.
Montez had one outstanding defensive game on Bohannon. He just works so hard.
According to Iowa fans though I’m sure he was handchecking . Iowa defense never dies this because they don’t get close enough to even put a hand on anyone

When we play MSU in the B1G semifinals Mathis needs to be locked on to Winston like this
Pike had to take him out of the game down the stretch because he is liability at the line. He has been shooting worse than the 59% last few games

2 days after the Iowa heartbreak loss, at about 9 at night, Montez was practicing 3’s by himself at the RAC.

Same was true when we lost to Iowa. Never saw such a heroic defensive effort.
I noticed that too. Very impressive. He definitely deserves props for his awareness, focus and hard work.
On one of the replay videos, Montez stole the ball from Bohanon....who tried mightly to get the ball back.

Can’t wait to watch the game again today! We were going absolutely bonkers at my house yesterday. Now I can watch with a lot less stress!
Except this time he tried to grab him but didn’t get his jersey in time like in the first game!!!

I agree, but like baseball if you don’t play defense, you’ll let in more than you’ll drive in.
In his case, even if he misses every foul shot, he’s still a plus player.

I told my viewing comrade last night (@RUDave_01) that if I were him I would work on free throws more than 3pters this offseason. It makes no sense to have the style of game he has and shoot FTs like he does. I’d work with geo too to develop a pullback jumper in the lane too. Curious to see how he molds his game while he is here
