Don't see why you guys aren't jumping all
Over these two. 5,006 yards passing 71 Tds and only 6 ints in his junior season. And for jason over 2,000 receiving yards. You guys will miss out on these kids and they will be huge for somebody else. Mason is a better qb then ANY qb in oklahoma

I agree about Mason, but his height will be an issue, I believe he stands at 5'11" currently. Mason can make any pass, that I have seen myself, and his speed is also rare for a QB, hope he gets a shot at D-1, I think he'll get several offers before it's done. Pirtle is also special, can't see how he won't get D-1 offers as well, Mason has been spoiled having Jason, knows he'll come down with the pass regardless of coverage. Locust Grove will be a blast to watch this fall, hard to get a seat at the games without getting there by 6pm.

Well if you would have done some research before spouting off you would see that TU is recruiting Pirtle (he is coming to junior day on March 1st)
Fine is too short for FBS but he will go be an outstadning FCS QB for someone.

Maybe you should do some research. Texas A&M just signed a qb that everyone in the country wanted. And it's a stretch to say Murray is 5'11".

No clue if this kid is a D1 kid or not, haven't seen him play. But you are off base if height is your only negating factor with this kid.

He's not close to the athlete Wilson or Kyler Murray (whom Fmr Cane is mentioning) is.

As a matter of fact I have done some research. I didnt realize I had to give a full detailed scouting report to be able to express an opinion.
Murray played better competition, has far superior athletiscism (potential 1st rounder in the MLB draft)
and thats just the surface. You can get away with not "checking the height box" when you possess the other attributes like Murray has.

You can express any opinion you want. I'm just giving a counter point after you gave a condescending reply to someone.

Drew Brees measured 6002 at the combine. If this kid is 5'11 what's the real difference? If you are saying he doesn't have the arm strength or accuracy to play qb at the next level then that's one thing. But simply saying "he's too short for FBS" is a weak evaluation.

Hard to tell from that film (it's pretty grainy) much about his arm strength. Reminds me a bit of the Nettleton kid from the OKC who was very successful in the MAC a few years back. You don't put up numbers like that without understanding reads and making good decisions with the ball. Hope he gets a D1 shot somewhere.

Are you referring to Tyler Tettleton from Norman that played at Ohio?

Yes. Also thought of Tyler Gooch for those who want to go back to the Burns era. Both those guys obviously played against much better competition. Fine is a guy whose going to have to go to some camps this spring and summer and show he can spin it at a D1 level.

I thought of Gooch as well, who say what you will about his time here, he was committed to Northwestern until he flipped during his senior year.

Chase Clement was damn good at Rice and not sure Chase Daniel measured 6' at the combine either.

Bottom line is very little offensive football is played under center anymore. So it's not quite as vital that a guy be able to see over the big uglies and read a defense in his 3 and 5 step drops. Much easier to stand in the gun and see what you need from 5 deep. Still the exception, not the rule. But guys have done it well

I disagree that height is a weak evaluation. If it was "weak" then they wouldn't measure guys at the combine. Height is usually an indicator of other issues (like lack of arm strength or ability to put on muscle to help prevent injury).
Guys like Vick, Brees, Wilson, Murray and even Manziel are outliers and their one similarity is plus athleticism which I said earlier I feel that Fine does not possess.

Agree about the condescending tone on both replies. But you are right you are entitled to your opinion, but make it plain.

With the amount of play action in college football today, the "Mobility" of a QB tends to play a bigger part than before.

Sure, everyone would love to have the 6'2" - 6'4" QB, but give me a Drew Brees or Tom Brady type of mobile QB with an accurate arm, and I believe we can do pretty darn well with them.

As far as "How many QBs do we need?" As often as you see a QB go down, it is always a good idea to have at least one in every class.

The difference is - can a smaller QB RUN. If he has wheels like Manziel, that compensates for his lack of "see over" height. I dislike the guy, but JM was maybe the best college QB I've seen in a long time - a player that could take over a college game with his feet and then his arm. IMO

By the way I heard a rumor, not sure where, but that Chad Morris of SMU might soon offer Fine.

Interesting. Morris has offered a couple of highly ranked Texas QBs and has been pursuing them hard. Figured he would wait until he was turned down by them before going to Plan B.

Height isn't the end all be all for a QB. One of my all time favorite QBs was Doug Flutie, 5'9" at best, but Flutie won everywhere he played. Had Flutie come through college now and then on to the NFL, he likely goes crazy in the NFL and not banished to the CFL. His skill level probably surpasses that of Brees and he had PLUS arm strength (1984, 65 yards in the air in a driving rain in Miami).

Read option QBs with plus athleticism work in college because not every LBer or DE has the same plus athleticism. They don't necessarily work in the NFL because you have guys like JJ Watt, Demarcus Ware, Julius Peppers, etc. chasing them around and LBers like Patrick Willis. The crazy athletic QBs that work in the NFL are guys with an above average QB IQ who can make an instant read at the LOS and know what's coming. Its why Tom Brady and Manning are so freaking good. It's why Dan Marino was so good. It's why Gus Frerotte was able to hang on in the NFL so long. It's why I suspect Manziel will eventually be labeled as a giant draft bust. He may have all the physical tools, but IMO, his football IQ is awful.

Interesting. I've met Flutie before at a charity event in MA. He was always pretty nice to fans and others.

Do you know the Rock? If so he needs to get in touch with my sister who is organizing a Relay for Life event in the Allentown/Bethlehem, PA area where the Rock is from. She is the thinking the People's Eyebrow could help her raise some extra pub and money for the event.

Dwayne and I haven't been on speaking terms since he gave Mick Foley 10 chair shots in front of Foley's wife and kids.

Jason Pirtle is very excited to be part of TU's Jr. day and is very impressed with the school and games he attended last season.

Height is absolutely without a doubt the most overrated measurable in athletics! There are soooooo many examples of this that there is not enough storage space on this website to list them all.

Agree with Dre. I would point out that since 2010 Monty has signed or gained a commitment from the following QBs:

6'3"
6'3"
6'4"
6'4"
6'5"

You can judge for yourself what our HC thinks about a
QBs measurable..

I can't agree with this fully. In football it depends on system and position. Can you get away with a 6'0" QB if he is mobile and your gameplan calls for moving the pocket and utilizing that...sure. Does it work at WR? Sure if the guy is 4.35 and runs little crossing routes but you're probably not calling for the fade pattern to the back of the end zone to a guy who is 5'9".Does it matter at RB? Not as much although if you see a 6'2" AP running a 4.4 at you it can be a little more intimidating than a 5'10" Emmitt Smith.

I do agree that you can't just say that a guy can't be successful as a QB unless he is 6'3" or taller.

I don't think the height of running backs has anything to do with the height of quarterbacks.

While I agree with DreDogg, height is still going to be a factor to some degree when it comes to QBs. If all things are equal except height, then a coach is going to take the taller QB.

I think height is an overrated metric, I want a kid that win games and make plays. I don't care if he's 5'11 or 6'5. We had a stretch of terrific QBs that were overlooked because of the "size" metric. OU would have won a title in 2005 with Paul Smith.

Congrats to the too short, not athletic enough QB who took the job from the kid with all the measurables two games into his true frosh season at North Texas. Keep ballin Okie
Wasn't the kid he replaced like an SEC transfer? Recall hearing 'Bama transfer at some point but maybe I'm thinking about a different kid.

Again, winners win. Doug Flutie the greatest example of how no one could look past his height.

Comes down to talent, and he's more talented than that other QB, who is not a gamer. Besides, Fine is certainly athletic enough and tall enough to play QB in today's version of C-USA. But one game against Bethune Cookman is a little early to tell what he's all about. 11-of-22 for 108 yds against Bethune Cookman, and 46 yards rushing.

Congrats to Fine on the start and the win, but this week against Florida will tell more of the story.

Fine got hit low on a sack, looked like he blew his knee the way he was holding it,. turned out it was okay, just pain, came back in later. Pretty impressive as a true freshman, hard to fathom, just hope he can stay away from the TO's against Florida, Gators have a nasty defense this year.

They showed some Florida-UNT highlights on Channel 8 sports on Sunday night. It was a clip of Fine getting sacked for a safety. North Texas had a tough go of it...managed just 53 yards of offense in the game. Mason Fine was sacked seven times and UNT had just eight first downs, three of which came by penalty.

I haven't really paid attention to Florida, but those are some crazy defensive stats.

I watched about 10 minutes of the game waiting for OU/Ohio State to kick. UNT could not block Florida at all. Fine never lost his poise though. I'm thinking that will be UNTs toughest go of the season so he should be fine from here on out.

I'd say so. Can't imaging leading a team into the swamp at 18. It was all I could do to remember the right snap count as a pup.

Defense wasn't ever really the problem for Muschamp, it was scoring points. He recruited a ton of war-daddies on D.
