Maryland "attendance" last night

It's officially listed as 12,055 (capacity, 17,950). If there were 2,055 on hand, I'd be surprised. Once again, you'd think universities would know the difference between "attendance" and "tickets sold." Reporting the number of tickets sold as attendance may be common in college and pro sports, but it's simply institutional lying. We see all the empty seats everywhere. We know the numbers are a lie, and we know lying has been in vogue for some time now, but--speaking for myself--I'd like to see "tickets sold," "capacity," and "attendance" listed. Doing so would be thorough and, well, honest. But that's probably just me.

It rather shocked me and Maryland has a good tradition in basketball from their ACC days. Thought playing a team playing good basketball up to this point like Iowa would make for a lively crowd.

We had a thread here about Rutgers having financial difficulties. I also get the vibe that the west coast teams like the money from the Big Ten but all the travel seems a burden and does really cost. Down the road I don't think this national super conference seems viable. At some point I think regional groupings will make more sense however that might shake out.

And here I thought it was only Iowa that had attendance issues....at least that was the impression I had from all the people who complain about attendance for every Hawk home game.
I'm sure that fact that the women sell out every game plays into both the perception and the affect of less attendance for the men.

Good point! The mens side involves just a total rebuild and that will take some time. I thought Ben did a great job connecting with fans before the season. Fan response seems better but still aways off from where Ben and serious fans like us want it.

6 pm tip-off might have contributed to the low attendance, in addition the Terps having a down season. It would probably take a more traditional foe like Duke or Virginia to overcome these two challenges.

I think the national super conference will do fine. The NBA and NFL have no troubles with travel. There are currently college football games scheduled in Europe...

The Gazette used to do a FOIA (freedom of information act) to get the scanned ticket numbers for Iowa MBB & WBB.

The difference between "announced attendance (total tickets sold & distributed)" and "scanned tickets (actual butts in the seats)" was pretty stunning during the Lickliter years and the final years of the Fran era.

And the difference so far for the McCollum era is evident, as well. Actual butts in the Carver Hawkeye seats << announced attendance.

You said more in this post than you may have thought you did. The odd tipoff times I agree don't help but it shouldn't make that much of a difference at a school always known for basketball.

You scored mentioning the more traditional foes they used to play from the ACC. When the Big Ten expanded east I recall reading that Rutgers fans seemed fired up while Maryland fans seemed lukewarm. Maybe Maryland doesn't feel all that at home in the Big Ten. Add that as another reason why this coast to coast alignment may not work out over time.

Yet they have a top 10 recruiting class next year.
