I was surprised how quick he looked. But I guess he was fresh :) It’s also impressive that he still had his head in the game, knew his assignments, etc, after getting so little PT.

Yep. Just like every game. We get allergic to what works really well and Martinez just drops back to pass almost every ******** play. I don’t see how more people don’t think this looks like WWE wrestling. We also went from having the most scholarship RBs in the B1G to playing a walk on WR back there. Amazing

Was actually more impressed with Brody Belt.

Didn't even know the kid was on our roster till Thursday when a good friend said he may well be our starting RB.

Kid played fantastic.

The few option plays we ran gained good yardage each time, yet it seemed like it was pre-determined before the game that we'd only run it 4 or 5 times. Based on the success we've had using option plays this year it is inexplicable why we don't use it more.

Would you be amazed to know that we ran the ball more times than Wisconsin yesterday?

We did. 35 times for 101 yards. Wisconsin 31 times for 252 yards.

I was on Scott all off season. I thought he might get a lot of carries this year. I liked the way he looked the little bit he played last year. Good back who could play for a lot of teams IMO.

He's not flashy. He's just solid and very versatile. He can play in the slot or at RB and allows you to run different plays without allowing the defense time to substitute packages. Very good athlete with good speed.

Looked decent again. Not sure what the deal is, but he runs hard and has good hands.
I'm not sure what Scott's top end speed is but that rarely comes in to play. Nice to have if you get him the ball in space but that is where Rhamir comes in.

I was yelling the same thing…. It was working every time and then…… nothing on multiple 3rd and 4th short yardage #Frostball

Either Davison or Sirles commented in the pregame show that they hoped to see more option from Adrian because "there was no reason to protect him from injury going forward. We're a 3 win team with nothing left to lose". One of those guys thought we would see more option in the red zone. That said, man the pass plays were there when we ran them. The QB just didn't execute.

Not to go on a tangent but we are going to lose so many guys this off-season. I put the over under at 10 underclassmen, not including the guys who have already left recently but that includes juniors who don’t come back next year.

Get rid of step, yant, and roll with Scott, Hayes, Johnson, and Ervin next year.
I'd hang onto yant, Johnson and Ervin Jr for sure.

But new running backs coach needs to establish true competition and depth chart, be smart about rotation and get best back on the field in the right situation.

They'll most likely be non-contributors and we'll replace them in the portal. It's just the way it is for every team in America now.

Get used to it. College football basically has free agency now.

I agree. But why did we stop running the option?
We ran the ball 35 times for 101 yards, what exactly was working in the run game?

2AM is as tough as they come, but playing against B10 defenses (especially Wisconsin) you simply can't have your QB taking shots from really big hard hitting players. When you are pitching the ball behind you without the edge sealed, you are begging for problems. To really run the option well, you need OL getting downfield and at the very least getting into LBs and Safeties.

When our OL could dominate people upfront, hold and even cave the edge, we could do just about anything we wanted.

Belt had 11 yards and 6 on options in the 2nd quarter. They never ran it again.

This is truly mind boggling to me and still can't believe what I watched with the RB coaching under Held.

You know I was thinking as watched our offense, what's wrong with the guys we're using right now as coaches? That was a damned good defense we played.
The only thing that stopped our offense was stupid ol penalties and AM passes. Clean up the OL penalties and the offense isn't in a situation where the QB takes chances and makes mistakes. Stay on schedule.

I'd feel good with Johnson, Ervin, Scott and Hayes next year. Johnson has really impressed me this year with staying the team, working hard to earn minutes. Is he an outstanding back? No, but he does a lot of things that are really valuable to the offense the other guys don't. Ervin is the best guy back in the room and hope the injury doesn't derail that, if Scott can stick with it and shows that he wants to be here and compete for a spot whether or not he's getting a large volume of carries or not I think that's valuable.

I'm not in on the Yant club like some but I'd like to see the running back room more defined next year instead of having like 8 backs that all have different strenghts/weaknesses.

When I was coaching HS football and we played an option team, we would have our CBs go straight for the QB. We taught them not to react to the pitch or any fakes, just flatten the QB hard. The LBs and S can cover the pitch man. It worked, and their QB was always worse for wear.

We used our DE to do that with ILB covering inside leaving cb onRB. Problem with safety covering that if I'm the OC I'm coming at you with TE right where that safety was ala Keith Jackson.

If you use cb to make QB commit you are basically blitzing every play or you aren't making QB make decision in backfield. That would be my concern.

How did you make that work?

Really? Who covered the WR's?

And who was getting optioned on your D?

Maybe that was fine for where you coached and you got away with it, but it's just not real football.
