George Mason 3-3 Mountain Brook: Hear a come from behind tie.

Maggie Walker 3-2 Godwin (5A): Seems the Dragon's haven't missed a step.

Giles 10-0 Narrows. Not too surprising.

George Mason 1-0 Murphreyborough? (It is in this very cool sounding tournament in Gatlinburg.)

Appo 2-2 Halifax Co.: Good first outing for the Raiders against a bigger school.

GM beat Greenville 4-2 to win their section of the tournament in Tenn. Sounds like a great experience for the players.

Martinsville beat Appomattox 2-1 in Martinsville. Another tough game to start the Raiders’ season.

Floyd 1-3 Auburn (1A): Auburn is playing a very defensive style, and it may just work better for them now.

The maxpreps scores aren't accurate. According to the Colonial District web page, Maggie Walker lost their first game to Godwin 0-4 and beat Hermitage 6-3.

Several games played yesterday...glad to see some places got rid of their snow quickly.

Just kidding (no one is going to that). Radford play Blacksburg and George Mason play Maggie Walker. No matter the side of the state those are two great matches to get to tonight.

Wow, Nelson must have a pretty decent squad this season. It was JR's first outing though, so I wouldn't count them out yet,
A little surprised at the Mason v. MW score line.

JR hasn't had a lot of time on the field with the way the weather has been. They graduated 3 starters last year and another of the ones that started a lot. The coaching had made some adjustments, some of which I don't totally agree with. Some kids take to new roles better but some don't. If the coaching gets the positions sorted out, based on player abilities they will be fine. If they don't might be a disappointing season. 2 of Nelsons points were a direct result of free kicks and I think alot of the calls seem to go to Nelson last night but they did out hustle JR for most of the game. They do have a good squad, disciplined and smart. JR kids for most part have played a lot of soccer together and have a talented bunch, just got to get the puzzle pieces put together.

Dan River and Magna Vista will only play once this year (scheduling issue). Dan River defeated Magna Vista 4-2 on March 16. Magna Vista won the girls game over DR 6-2.

Appomattox lost 6 Seniors, 5 starters, all attacking (4 midfielders, and striker), I think they’ll just need to get some time to build that chemistry and find their offense. They have a new coach too, so there’s a lot of turnover from last year.

Ridgeview beat Grundy 15-0 the other night, coupled with a 14-0 win last week over Grundy, the Wolfpack outscored Grundy 29-nil this season.

I don't think we're THAT good, so Grundy must be deplorable.

I don't want to sound mean-spirited but they are lacking talent quite a bit. I believe Graham beat them 17-0 last year. I don't see any improvement coming now. So if that is the case, I hope their coach is finding a way to at least make it fun for them.

Appo vs. Heritage - The better team won the game. One of the goals for Appo was on a PK, rightfully earned. The other two goals were effort/ hustle, whatever you want to use. Appo had more quality chances, probably 2:1 ratio. Both teams struggled to put more than 2 or 3 passes together at a time. Heritage lacked a presence in the midfield and that probably was the difference in the outcome. Appo's center back was a beast, constantly winning 50/50's and shutdown any advance from Heritage. One of Heritage's goals came off a corner, man unmarked and the back post not manned - not sure if that was a missed assignment or their setup. Overall, Appo will need to play a lot cleaner game and finish those chances to hang with DR and Nelson.

Thanks for the info. Was the passing a struggle because of field conditions?..I know fields in SWVA are a mess this week. Or is that just two quality teams pressuring well?

Field appeared to be in pretty good shape. I would have to say that passing accuracy and the pace of play was more the cause.

Kim Skeens supplied three goals and Andrea Meade added two as the Pioneers cruised.

Cassidy Burke earned the shutout.

BOYS SOCCER

(1A) Patrick Henry 6, Tazewell 0

Patrick Henry improved its record to 3-0 in a win against Tazewell.

Nate Wagner, Jeremy Johnson, Rowan Orfield, Jonah Bassett, Natalie Strait and Lance Farris each scored one goal. Orfield and Gavin Grossman each had one assist for Patrick Henry.

The Rebels got two saves from Cruz Lyons and one from Hanna Hahn.
