Low expectations

I have been reading article’s from the beat reporters and some posts on this site about what type of program that we should expect. James Kratch being one of those reporters, has said we should be happy with 1-2 years competing for a tournament bid and 3-4 years of a rebuild. He compares us to Northwestern and their tournament appearance a couple of years ago. With our facilities, location (recruiting hot bed), and conference there is no reason that this should be our expectations. The goal every year should be a long tournament run and on down years competing for a tournament bid. Watching a team like St. Mary’s last night who almost every year has a strong team, with a lot less to offer as a program should say a lot. Why can’t we compete every year? Why do we need to accept mediocrity? Why should we not compete for the best recruits? Why should we not be a top destination for players in the portal? We should not settle for less.
Pike won’t be fired at the end of the year, and shouldn’t. Who knows, maybe we turn this thing around, but right now it looks like the rebuild is starting this season. If we fall off a cliff record wise, and are back in the basement of the BIG then Pike needs to be on the hot seat next season. If other programs can compete every year with less, then so should we.

Ha, he’s two years late to the Northwestern comparison.

horrible timing for that article though, taking total pressure off the coach, players, and program after horrible performances. Even a rebuilding team wins going away in some of these games. C’mon.

I know some of you like Kratch but I don’t see the competency in anything that doesn’t require looking up info through information requests

Even with better facilities we are behind our peers and many non p5 schools in terms of arenas etc. certainly way behind in re to tradition of winning and overall alumni support ($$$). These are very meaningful hurdles that some people around here don’t want to admit or don’t understand. It will take a long time of being decent/good to make RU a destination. Getting impatient can backfire too. This is a tough place as has been proven for decades. It’s great to have high expectations- realizing them is a totally different matter.

agree, I like how all the pundits now are saying its okay to take steps back

what a loser mentality, when anyone suggested last year a possibility that RU could become Northwestern, it was met on the board with total disdain despite it being a real possibility

I’ve lowered the bar and expectations this year … without that fire and effort on D, expecting 3-5 wins in conference. RU will have a few nights where shots finally fall, but don’t see many wins without the hustle we’re used to seeing.
