Am I the only one who thinks it’s a sad day when one must apologize for their stating thoughts? We are living in a day where everyone’s opinion is valued unless it differs from the groupthink. This is “tolerance” at its best.***

Nope you are dead on. Somehow tolerance = "conform to my way of thinking or be persecuted" to a ton of people

It's sad that anyone with a brain would take Brees comments and turn it into some race baiting stuff. He's basically saying "no problem with the message, but I disagree with the method". Truly sad

"he wouldn't understand" is a dog whistle for "he's part of the problem," or "he's racist," which is what other folks have come out and said about it. Only low IQ people think this way.

Drebin said it better than me.

He's going to be fine. Would have been better had he just stuck to his guns and let those circling with pitchforks walk themselves out of energy. He's got generational wealth that he gives away to minority/underprivileged situations at a higher rate than almost anyone out there. They gonna reject his funding now? I didn't think so.

It's utterly asinine that someone can spend the amount of time, energy, and money over his entire professional career ALWAYS doing the right thing -- then say something that is not objectively wrong just stated at a time when everyone is emotional(Dak has consistently said the same thing BTW) -- and have everyone attempt to ostracize him for it.

The problem I have with people saying "Brees just doesn't get it" also don't seem to "get" while doing a protest during the national anthem might be potentially sends a wrong message.

Because it looks like you're not protesting an individual issue but the nation at large. A nation that for a overwhelming majority doesn't cause issues and has shown itself to very accepting of diversity even though the media continues to give the extremist a national bullhorn. As I said in another thread I'd disagree with this manner of protest even if I was 100% behind the premise of the protest (say abortion). It's just not the right method.

It also doesn't help when a lot of the stuff they are fighting "against" and claims they make in speeches don't stand up to most fact-checks (please note I said "alot", not "all"). It's actually kinda funny how the media quickly fact-checks most politicians but refuses to touch this stuff with a 10 foot pole. I think that's why the issue of finding a "solution" is so difficult.

He is getting hammered for his views.

I think Drew ends up retiring before the season...if there even is one.

Apparently, in this country, you can't be a patriot in support of the US, and still be 100% against racism and police brutality.

Hang it up, Drew. It ain't worth it.

Disagreeing that kneeling is the course for change is racist?

What if you just fundamentally don’t like colin kaepernick, is that racist as well?

I don't think it was so much that he disagreed with kneeling during the anthem. It was that his response was tone-deaf to the moment. He spent a lot of time waxing poetic about the flag and WWII without acknowledging what was happening in the world around him.

I think Drew Brees has done a lot of great things and I don't think this takes away from that, but I do think that was a tone deaf response. He'll weather this. There's too much happening too fast and he's done too much for this to have any lingering effect. I think a lot of you are more outraged about the outrage than the original people outraged by the comment.

3 years ago all he would have to say is, “I agree with you guys, I just don’t like the method of your protest.” Within a week it would blow over. These days, the outrage and Twitter mob let you know what your opinion is, and if you have the gall to differ, they try that cancel culture ********.

But he didn't say that, did he?

All the Brees issue means is that if you offer up your opinion, you are subjecting your opinion to being potentially criticized. If it is a popular opinion, then the person can continue saying it and gain power/influence/support. If it is an unpopular opinion, then the person can do nothing and see what happens, or they can apologize and hope for their power/influence/support to not be diminished too much.

Brees is apologizing in an effort to remain a leader with power and influence in both professional and personal settings.
He didnt have to apologize, he chose to apologize. There is a distinct difference.

Brees' comments about kneeling and the anthem missed the point of what is happening right now. It is unfortunate he is being held up as an example of ignorance since he has financially done so much for the local black community. At the same time, he chose to wade into this toxic pond and now he is dirty from it.
Every celebrity/athlete/public figure should have had pre-written comments drawn up at the start of this so that they could say what was scripted for them and move on.
A wealthy white male can have sympahy but never empathy for this issue. Its best to just say you are supportive of change and that you are wanting to listen to what is wrong.

If Michael Thomas is a litmus test it may be rough sailing, but Brees has proven in the past that he is tough to sink. We’ll see...

I didn't realize the Saints have hired Malcolm Jenkins from Philadelphia. Jenkins has very strong views and Brees may not survive all the rancor against him.

So when does one “have to apologize”? Seems like that is what Brees HAD to do given all the ridiculous outrage he had come against him. I eagerly await the all-knowing, wokest-of-the-woke to educate us all on “had to vs chose to”.

As far as the rest of your diatribe, I only issue one giant eye-roll emoji.

You cannot be honest and objective and claim that the Confederate Battle flag embedded on the MS flag has nothing to do with racism or slavery. It was literally added to the flag after the south lost the Civil war, post Reconstruction, in honor of General P.G.T. Beauregard who commanded Rebel forces.

ETA: to say "added to" is not completely correct. MS had had state flags prior to then that were benign, but at the time of creation did not have an official flag
And there are people who think you cannot be honest and objective and claim that kneeling during the national anthem isn't disrespectful to service members that put their life on the line.

Not arguing any particular position or their good or bad faith. Just pointing out that if you are trying to influence people, it's usually not a good idea to use a symbol where you have to explain to people that you don't mean the seemingly obvious interpretation that is disrespectful but that there is a deeper meaning. I'm not going into the local synagogue with a swastika and tell them they shouldn't be offended b/c I just mean it in the original western meaning of good luck. I'm not wearing a confederate flag to the local NAACP meeting and telling them it's just southern pride and has nothing to do with racism. I'm not going to my local VFW and spitting on the flag and tell them it's not disrespectful to them and has nothing to do with them. Aside from the practical reasons, I wouldn't do those things b/c if I wanted to communicate with them, I would at least try to do so in ways that they immediately understand without me having to explain that I'm not intending the obvious with my communications. There would have to be a very good reason for me to start out with something that they will interpret as roughly the opposite of my intended meaning.

"Low IQ" ha. Speaking of dog whistles. No he was saying Brees wouldn't understand because he wasn't a black man. That doesn't equate to Brees is racist. Thomas and Brees are going to be ok.

If you can hear the dog whistle, you are the dog. If you think "low iq" is a reference to people of a particular race, besides obviously not paying attention to what the outrage mob looks like, you think that might be you being a little racist?

One doesnt really ever have to apologize when giving their opinion in an interview. How is that not clear to you?
In this instance, it appears Brees felt he should in order to remain popular/powerful/influential.

Dont call me the wokest of the woke. I just had a 30min talk with my wife where I continually said I am confused as **** as to whats happening right now across the country and confused why its happening now vs other instances of police mistreatment. I am definitely not woke.
Im not woke, Im just not a raging racist or bigot and I can often sympathize with both sides of an issue, so to some on here it seems like Im woke.

Drew Brees is a good person. I’m sorry, but being against kneeling during the national anthem doesn’t make someone a klansman. He’s done so much for the city of New Orleans. It’s kind of sickening that he isn’t being given the benefit of the doubt on this one. He’s even said that he supports the reasons for the protests. I’m honestly flabbergasted by all this.

It's happening right now because

A.) It's an election year
B.) The media who so desperately wants racism to be rampant finally found their "gotcha" moment where a rare true case of police brutality was caught on camera and it's being milked for people to say "hey, we tried to tell you that there was a major problem" while completely ignoring all stats that point to that mindset being complete horse ****.

Love the “low IQ” in a post about dog whistles. Nice touch.

If you think the term "low IQ" was a dog whistle for anything other than "low IQ" says more about you than it does about me. There's not one particular race that holds a monopoly on the term so insinuating that I was suggesting otherwise is a position that you should be thoroughly disappointed and ashamed of yourself for taking.

Brees' opinion isn't an unpopular opinion, that's where you're mistaken. Brees' opinion is only unpopular among the social justice/social media warrior crowd. Brees' opinion is probably shared by the majority of the country. His opinion is then respected by the majority of the other half that don't agree with him. Only a small minority that disagree are even vocal about it.

Brees is guilty of nothing other than piss-poor timing.

To expound on this, I’ll just say that I’ve never in my life experienced a time like this when jobs are literally on the line over a tweet/comment that’d be considered mostly harmless any other point in history.

Somewhere in all this chaos, there’s a good cause out there that people are fighting for, but the pitchforks are our right now.

"About 22 percent of Americans use Twitter.

And roughly 10 percent of those users are responsible for 80 percent of tweets — meaning just 2 percent of Americans are contributing to a majority of the site’s dialogue, the researchers noted."

Amen. Full disclosure, I am a Saints fan. I don't know Drew Brees personally. I only know what I see when he's out publicly and what others say about him. No one has done more for the city of New Orleans. He has done more than any mayor, senator or politician has ever done. When the city was on its last leg, he was there. Giving not only his money, but his time and energy.

Since all this has started many have said you can't be silent anymore. He has a career of not being silent. Through concrete action, he has shown the type of person he is. It's one thing to share a black square on your social media account or share a hash tag. He actually walks the walk.

Ive thought too that some of it could be due to unrest from Covid. Being holed up for 2 months, many are out of jobs, schools arent in session- a lot of idle time is now available. \
I agree with your A reason too.
Your B reason could be partly true- the first half, sure Ill roll with. Claiming people arent treated differently by some police and that all people have equal opportunities regardless of skin color isnt correct.

My brother in law is a police officer in my state's largest city. I talked with him yesterday because on Tuesday he was forced to work a 17 hour shift. I very much understand not all police are bad. Most police are great.
I also very much understand that some police dont handle all situations equally.

You mention stats point to police brutality being ********. I would guess that statistics like that are situationally interpretive and counter stats could easily show the opposite in other specific situations.

Sorry, when I said 'unpopular opinion', I meant that it is unpopular to those who are reacting to it.
Even if there is a silent majority, if their opinion is silent, then its tough to say his opinion is popular. Voicing support is kinda important.
