Yes, I know this will soon be locked, but given it's yet another slow, boring no-sports day, thought I'd share an occurrence yesterday.
After several years of friendship with a neighbor who happens to be black , in his 60's, the friendship has ended due to TDS. Though we've known all these years he was liberal & I conservative, it was always respectful, putting civility & friendship ahead of politics. Then yesterday.
Long story short, he started ranting about Trump being a racist, saying if was, "not even debatable", and said I must acknowledge that. I did not, and challenged him to provide what evidence he had that made him think it was not even debatable, thinking we'd have a reasoned debate. Nope.
He acted incredulous, saying he "knew I wasn't a liar, so come on & admit I know he is a racist!" I would not, and again asked him to tell me why he was so convinced. His answer? Because Trump hates Obama! In his mind, Trump hates Obama because he is black. Hate is a strong word I could have debated on, but the much larger point was that it had to be based on race...not politics, not the open attacks on Trump by Obama, not the recent uncovering of the abuse of power in an effort to undermine the incoming Trump presidency, etc.
Each time I tried to reason with him to provide answers as to why his record and black supporters debunk this claim, he would interrupt with, "Oh, c'mon man! I can't believe you even think this is debatable! " He proceeded to tell me about the, "white man having his foot on his neck in North Carolina in the 50's & 60's, making him drink piss & eat ****". This to suggest only he could understand and identify racism. Apparently my being white prevents me from having enough perspective to be as good a judge as he on the subject. (He did not see the irony).
Well, after insinuating I was a liar for not admitting Trump is a racist, I was walking away when our friendship officially ended after he asked, "Are you a racist too?"
Now I'm trying really hard to get more into the word, but I wasn't able to stop myself from yelling, "17 you! I guess because you're black that makes me a racist too!"
This is what it is like living in Northern California as a conservative.
