Are you there? What the hell happened at the end of the 2nd match?
I am not. And I don't know. Total surprise. I assume 2 takedown and 2 nearfall. But no details.

DeMichael Franklin of Iowa State beat Joe 6-3 for those that are wondering what we are talking about

Track showed a takedown, a stall point and then a penalty point.

70% win % is out now. Take a MFF the next match and get ready for Iowa tomorrow.

Yeah his next match is against University of Dubuque, so that doesn't do him any good.

As a conference, we needed him to get an allocation.

He has defaulted out of the tourney now. Not a huge surprise, no benefit to him anymore

Horrible, and sad whoever DeMichael Franklin is. It seems whatever John's plans for Joe are, Joe is going to mess them up.

Looks like Joe took a MFF in his next match.

The loss isn't good obviously, but he will still earn the RPI ranking for seeding at Nationals. That was likely the main priority. Earning an allocation for the conference was probably secondary. To do that, he would have needed to either skip the Iowa dual and finish at 9-3 or beat Kemerer and finish at 10-3. And I don't think the plan was for him to skip Iowa.

Just let Shomers wrestle at 174. And Kemerer is gonna embarrass Joe tomorrow if he wrestles.

Have we ever had a wrestler regress this much from their freshman and sophomore years? What a disappointment.

DeMichael Franklin is from Houston, Tx. and wrestled for Mayde Creek Highschool and in his sr. year he was fourth in the UIL tournament and 2nd sat the Mid-summer Mat match. I am in no way trying to denigrate this wrestler but just pointing out the discrepancies between his accomplishments in High School and college. Joe was a 3X state champion in High School and a 2X All-American in college. DeMichael can not make the Iowa State team as a red shirt Sophomore. I concur that Shomers should wrestle tomorrow and in the Big 12 tournament. Thanks to Joe for his wrestling career and it appears to have come to a sad end.

At this point, is there still belief from anyone associated with the program that Joe deserves to be the guy at 174 more than Shomers? Was there a wrestle off?

Stika actually beat that guy at the Scuffle (Stika also ended up taking 5th today).

I could see Shomers wrestling at Iowa, but he'll likely need to win ranking matches in order get the spot in the postseason. Hopefully it's best of 3, no more than 1 hour apart.

The concern is Joe fading when wrestling multiple matches close together. Quick takedown in the 1st, about a minute of riding time before an escape, then got a quick escape in the 2nd. Leading 3-1 going into the 3rd, lost 6-3.

I have always struggled with the Joe situation. It would be an incredibly hard call even if he weren't John's kid. Because he is, it an almost impossible situation for John.

On one hand, I think Joe is probably better than Shomers and consistently beating him in the room (like he did Chandler). In any sport I ever played, the standard philosophy was always "best player plays." If that is your position, it is hard for me to justify Shomers over Joe.

On the other hand, wrestling is clearly not a big priority for Joe anymore and he is not a very good example for our younger wrestlers. Shomers (like Chandler) appears to be a harder worker, better teammate, and in better health than Joe.

I think I would still go with Joe if healthy. He has not done anything that justifies showing him the door, he just does not try as hard as he should. However, Joe at 70% effort is still better than Shomers at 100% IMO. Joe has let down himself and his teammates and he will have to live with not reaching his full potential. But if he is still the superior wrestler, he should wrestle. This is such a rare situation where an OSU wrestler half-asses things and is still talented enough to beat his competition in the room. Hopefully it does not happen again.

While I do not disagree that technique-wise, Joe is better than Shomers I am now thinking Shomers can beat guys that Joe can't even though I am sure Joe can beat Shomers in the room. This is probably due to familiarity more than anything else. There is no way to sugar-coat Joe's loss to a wrestler that will probably never make Iowa state's team. Shomers will lay it on the line and I think qualify us for the NCAA's and not sure Joe will.

That may well be true, and if it is, Shomers should get the spot. However, determining whether a guy will qualify for NCAAs and how he might do there is much harder and more subjective than lining them up and seeing who comes out ahead.

This will probably be one of those stories when we look back and find out he broke his neck and was actually a quadriplegic and was using only one of his lungs. Then we will say, “Dang! Can you believe he almost beat the D2 wrestler with no working limbs and only one working lung. That guy was amazing!”
