Apparently he is 25, has one semester of eligibility left, has played in the D League and in foreign countries. A lot of major schools, including Rutgers, after him.

College athletes & b-ball is Dead. RIP
Every time I see a comment like this I tell people to reference that ratings for football and hoops have only gone up the last 5 years

general public likes big brands

if anything the pool of overall talent in college is far better than it was because guys will stay in college

A lot of the pieces to the NIL world bother me but this doesn’t really. College sports clearly isn’t about academics, but in principle I don’t have a problem with the decision to leave school for the draft or Europe being allowed to return to school later and keep whatever eligibility they had left. If each kid is allowed 4 years (or now 5 years - whatever it is), I don’t have a problem with allowing it to be spread out and money aside, I always felt amereurism was an unnecessary criteria. Doing away with it worked fine for the Olympics. The paper requirement in my view should be matriculation at the school you represent. That’s the tie to the program. However unimportant academics are in practice the symbol of it (connection to the school) matters and the day that gets dropped (if it does) will be a big hit. Without that there’s no purpose to the college brand. This is the NCAAs last hanging string. To have any hope of surviving this is the one requirement they must insist remain.

I was joking, of course, but in all seriousness I’m not sure what’s stopping anyone with eligibility left from doing this other than their contract to the league.

100% agree. There are so many guys with eligibility in nba, g league, euro and other leagues that could come back and make huge NIL, get a lot of fame, have a lot of fun, and dominate. These guys now 3-4 yrs as a pro would simply dominate and it will become extremely less important worrying about one’s HS recruiting class just like it is for football.

that could lead to way fewer D1 spots for HS seniors. All these former college players could come back and then what is the connection to the school? Nothing but a Jersey.

student athletes are irrelevant now in hoops and football
