Incredible run at NDSU.

Winning an FBS P5 conference championship is no small feat in this era.

Hall of famer.

Retiring at 58 is fantastic. That’s my goal as well. I’m guessing he’ll get a hefty undisclosed early retirement check and K State gets a young up and comer with strong ties to the school. Rare to see a win-win this day and age.

I think that will be a great hire.
Slam dunk on paper.
Kind of crazy how a storied program like PSU has no great former player/coach in the wings to take over making their hiring process tortuous while ksu handles it in a few hours.

Maybe,PSU has made a move with someone still playing, brohm,Diaz, deboer ect...but gotta wonder

Yeah, I mean no staff over the years that left for elsewhere that wants to come back now?

Interesting that both K-State and Michigan State made coaching hires this cycle without any search to speak of. I suppose there was likely movement going on in the background for a few weeks in both cases, but certainly neither school felt compelled to post the job before conducting interviews.

I wonder if he would have done a soft retirement and took the uni job if the timing was better.

Having Klein step right in probably means that program will maintain. Wonder if Avery Johnson will stick around or bag hunt.

Sounds like he left because the game had changed too much and he no longer wanted to be a part of it. That's what the AD implied, at least.

Hard to blame him. I am surprised Kirk hasn't done the same, or more of the 'older' coaches.

I think Klieman was tired of fans reactions and lack of respect for what he has accomplished. See his reaction after a tough loss to Utah a couple of weeks ago. He was very emotional and tearing up and said:

"I've given my friggin' ... life for this place for seven years. I've given everything for seven years. And I think I deserve a little bit of respect. I'm frustrated like everybody else is, but I love those kids. And I'll go to friggin' battle with those kids any day."

He hated the job, but the $$ was too good to walk away. Surpised he lasted this long. The NIL world sealed the deal for him

Do not blame him at all. Supposed collegiate sports are all about $ and is cutthroat IMO.

Very few people can afford to retire that young IMO. I did but I have medical care from VA (Tricare for Life) as disabled military retiree, otherwise would not have retired early.
Thank you and our country thanks you. Godspeed.

Reminds me of the canary in a coal mine when a class act can't stand the environment anymore. If you can't, best to get out and enjoy life doing something you like.
I'm shooting for 70 or thereabouts. Lots of personal reinventing, and I have the best job I've ever had. Have to cut it off to save time to play... 🙂
