And I'm assuming that the quotations mean that since my grandkids use crayons, and don't eat them any longer, their qualified to be called writers as well...
I certainly enjoy their work a great deal more than hers.
She said on Twitter that she will be covering ORU and TU this year. She does a fine job and the vitriol that some of you spew towards her is repulsive.
You are welcome to take a part-time gig or pro-Bono gig for the world, blog or some other publication. Write for the them and maybe do some interviews. Until then, you should probably take a shot of whiskey and smoke a bowl and not be a complete and total D bag.
I've met ole' Barlass on a handful of occasions and I can assure you he's not a "total D bag". I'm totally indifferent about Kelly Hines' writing/reporting but I know she's most likely hand-cuffed by factors out of her control.
Would I like to see her ask Monty the tough questions? Of course, we all would. But I'm guessing her superior(s) have told her not to. I'd also like to see more lengthy and in-depth features regarding TU athletes across any sport rather than the NASCAR round-up on the back page, but they're not giving her the time or space.
The World doesn't give column inches to things concerning TU. And the only reason ORU is being covered at all by a single writer and just not the bored intern is they made a run last year and have a POY candidate in Absmas.
I dropped the TW some time ago because they consistently pander to OU and OSU and refuse to give TU it's proper due and instead let Haisten write 7000 columns about how TU doesn't belong in division I athletics.
this is my beef with the TW - haisten, emig (or whatever the hell his name is), and a couple of others over the years have taken so many shots at TU, it’s not even funny anymore.
Kelly is on the beat and covers the games. I think she does fine given the circumstances she’s working under.
For comparison, just look at a city newspaper that covers a fellow AAC team. You will find that the columnists have a completely different view/slant on the local university in their area (a positive one). For us, the TW wants us to be viewed as the little brother of ou and Osu rather than treating us like w true d1 program in a top six conference (for at least one more year).
I met barlass in Myrtle beach with Nevadanatural and he is a decent guy from what I have seen.
I figure the write up for ORU is because they play tonite. I am sure she has a write up for TU tomorrow. I appreciate the work she puts in both on print and on social media.

Used to talk with him about TU recruiting nuggets in the early-mid 90's. I subscribed to HoopScoop, Midwest Hoops and Bob Gibbons services. This was well before the new internet services - like the Rivals crap. Those earlier services were pretty darn accurate. I also used my student Westlaw account to get every news story around the country on key recruits that Tulsa was looking at --- before the internet really took off. I had a ton of free time and resources. Jimmie liked TU and did a good job covering them.

i agree Trammel did a very good job but Bailey was my favorite.

No, her assignment is literally "Staff writer" in the sports dept. Last year it was her and the new guy who were assigned to cover TU and ORU basketball and TU football. The other guy has left the TW so these assignments are hers and hers alone again.
Barry Lewis volunteered to cover some games at ORU last year, in addition to his huge workload running high school sports coverage and the Drillers. ORU wasn't covered much last year outside of when Barry covered the games. With a Sweet 16, obviously they need more coverage.
I’ve been away from Tulsa for almost 25 years but I remember the newspapers always covered the “big 4” in football and the “big 5” in basketball. Every week during the season there would an article in Sunday’s paper about OU, OSU, TU and Arkansas. During basketball season the articles would be the day after the game and ORU was added. The football articles might vary in size or placement depending on opponent or perceived game importance but they covered all local fan bases. What happened to change this? BTW, I was a Tribune subscriber before they went under but we still got the Sunday World because the Tribune didn’t publish a Sunday edition.
The World is now thinner on most days than the thinnest paper you ever received. Some days there are only two(thin) sections. The Sunday paper on it's best day is about as thick as a Thursday paper w/ads. And on top of that it almost always includes classifieds as part of that thin paper, cuz it's revenue. So there isn't much news there, sports or otherwise. They still charge the inflationary equivalent of what it cost 25 years ago to get a physical paper delivered. It is suffering a slow death.
