Just So So Disappointing

For some reason, coming off a 3 game win streak, having already beaten Ohio State, you would think we would play with passion and superb effort. The lack of defense today was alarming. Wesson had a career half but the rest of Ohio State was nothing special. We gave up so many open 3 pointers that they knocked down, it was alarming as our defender was not in the same zip code. On the other hand , when we needed an open 3 from Kiss or Geo we got nothing. . Giving up 13-28 from three point range is atrocious and cost us the game. We did not shut down cutting lanes , never doubled the post early and our rotations were slow. I hate to say it but we looked lethargic. The defense as as whole was just terrible.

We will not compete and not win if Geo struggles . He was really bad today, starting from the first play of the game , when we got a scramble rebound and beautiful kick out for 3 with no one on him, and he decides to drive right into Wesson for a charge . As bad as his offense was today, his defense was worse. If their point guard doesn’t get 20 points, mostly in the second half. , we have a better chance to win. It was obvious he was having a real bad game and Coach I think made a mistake leaving him in for 35 minutes. Then the question was who to play, and I say Caleb, who played well and would have played even better with more minutes.

Eugene was awesome today and deserved some help. Getting almost nothing out of Mathis, Kiss, and Harper was painful as they did not try to cut hard to get open or attack the rim. Boy do we miss just one player from the wing that can hit a consistent three. It was the difference in the game , they had at least one and we did not have any. Coach has to solve that problem with the last scholarship for next year.

I know what you are saying and feel. I did think our defense was not good especially on the perimeter. Its why we lost. Its why RU got back in the Indiana and Nebby game...success with this team rides with the defense and it wasnt there today. That being said I do not think its an effort thing rather than this team not being ready to take another leap forward, we all. The margin of error for this team is still small...its bigger than it was a few weeks ago but its hard to expect a win at OSU at this stage when the opponent is playing so well and will likely land in the NCAA tourney. Without Geo and Montez making shots, we had no shot.

The absence of consistent 3 point shooting is one of the main differences between winning and losing basketball programs.Rutgers still doesn't have one consistent outside shooter while Eugene remains the only consistent double digit scorer from the inside.

Rutgers was a 10 point underdog, not exactly a stunner here. Ohio state had the two best players on the court and they both brought their A games. Rutgers just needs a 3 point stud, kiss is not cutting it.

Agree about the statement that is is hard to expect from our young team , but part of the reason Ohio State played so well, was our defense and intensity were missing in action . Almost every thread I post about our key to winning , is that Geo has to give us 14-20 a game and we will have a chance. Not only was his offenseterrible, his defense was worse and he did nothing to set up anybody today. I hope this is not him wearing down because we need him Tuesday against Michigan and 5he rest of the year

Just life on the road in the Big Ten. We didn’t play a horrible game, but just too difficult to beat good teams in their arenas, especially when they’re playing well.

I don’t have the same awful feeling after this loss like I had after the Minnesota and Purdue road losses.

I’m actually surprised so many people expected a win today. This is almost exactly what I expected. OSU is a better team than us and we were playing them on the road. They also had revenge as an added incentive. This outcome has zero influence to me on the direction of the program.

agree those team basically bitchslapped RU, it was layup and transition after transtition...the difference...Eugene but even he couldnt do it all himself, too many players not making plays on both ends

Teams have figured out that running high ball screens against the RU guards opens up the 3 all around.

Not easy to win when the opponent hits +44% from 3.

Interestingly - RU defense changes when Thiam got on the court.

Loss was not unexpected, why would you jump off band wagon? They will probably lose next Tues too we all expect downs, let's just hope for some ups
Who is jumping anywhere? I am a 30 plus year season ticket holder and have seen enough of out teams over the year to know when they did not come with the same defensive intensity that was needed to extend the winning streak. Ohio State is nothing special but if you lose their players and they hit wide open threes because your defense sucked, it is disappointing. Ohio State played better than they have in a month because we let them get comfortable on offense and do whatever they wanted.

RU gets had a total of 14 fouls and OSU had just 6 turnovers. To me, that right there showed how "tough" we played today. We gave them the shots and they made them.
We didn't make it an ugly game.

This 1,000,000%. I wanted Pikiell fired during those games. (maybe a tad emotional). I was totally fine with this loss. We do need Mathis to get back on track.

I think you nailed it...Peter Kiss was the reason Rutgers lost....:cool2:

Why make Kiss the lone scapegoat when Rutgers got no offense from Baker,Harper and Mathis. The offensive woes are well known by opponents watching tape.

The inability to recruit 3 point shooters is astounding since the way basketball games are played is dependent on outside shooting to open up inside scoring.

Since New Years the team had reached the point where the ups and downs were pretty close to even. There likely will continue to be both.

Wesson killed us early, inside and out..

the only way we could have stayed in this game all the way is if Ohio state had a bad day with hitting threes....it happens sometimes, even with open
looks..... someone said they hit 44% against us, and we could almost never overcome that.

Kiss has the 2nd best 3 point % of our guards in B1G games. However, he's not going to help much only taking 5.5 shots per game.
