,,,I absolutely love the Historic WVU football yearly reviews one gentlemen has posted on youtube. Love to see the old Stadium, hear the who's who of WPIAL (western PA) football players of the 60's and 70's. Just curios, were the Eers in a conference per se? I think one mentioned the Southern conference. It seemed for all of the years the Richmond Spiders and VMI were whipping boys, but scheduled every year but not necessarily in a manner like now, FBS early season vs. FCS. But they were "peers" on the schedule. Odd ones to me were Tulane as a constant, and seemed like a thorn in WVU's side, and Kentucky each year. ECU was on a few films, but ironically ECU played Marshall each year but hard to believe even then Marshall & WVU never played, yet it seemed the schedules may have been similar overall. Also I did not know Penn State seemed to have bested the Eer's more often than not. Seemed like they always won. To the point were the Spiders and VMI "conference" foes? Or were the Eers just independent? in 1979 were both stadiums still up? I did not know the coliseum was as old as it is, props to that building, it still as nice to me as any on campus newer arenas, I.E. "The Pete".

I think Richmond and VMI were original SoCon members. It runs in my mind the there was some connection between SoCon and ACC and there was a split of some kind to form 2 conferences.
Beginning in 1070's and moving forward until psu, pitt, the orange and BC went to conference, Mountaineers played all four each year as I recall. It's a damned shame that the five teams didn't form the core of a true Big East Conference - throw in VT and Miami who were all in old Big East and it could have been something, but then the other conference started to expand and it all just dissolved and Mountaineers end up in Big 12 and were damned lucky to.
Was at the last game in the old stadium in 1979 my freshman year. It was nice to be in school at a time during the greatest transition for Mountaineer football. Loved the early 80s with WVU often ascending in the polls. Don Nehlen put WVU on the map and for all the naysayers, AD Pastilong put us in a position to become what we are today. It’s true.
WVU and Tulane have only met 6 times. WVU leads 4-2
The multidivision did not begin until 1973. Reorganization of the NCAA was approved at the Association's first Special Convention.The membership was divided into three divisions for competition and legislative purposes. An institution in Division II or III may elect to participate in Division I in one sport, other than football or basketball and must abide by the Division I bylaws governing the sport, even though their membership rests in another division. Institutions, which elect Division III, could award any number of grants-in-aid, but athletics ability could not be taken into consideration.
We spared Mini U the embarrassment of historical beat downs until the state government became involved and the beat downs continued.
The A10 established in 1975. At that time, basketball was its only sport. After its first season, it added sports other than basketball and changed its name to the Eastern Athletic Association.
However, despite its official names, it was popularly known as the Eastern 8, as it then had eight members (Villanova, Duquesne, Penn State, West Virginia, George Washington, Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers).
After changes in membership that saw charter members Villanova and Pittsburgh leave (in 1980 and 1982, respectively) and new members St. Bonaventure (1979), Rhode Island (1980), Saint Joseph's (1982), and Temple (1982) enter, establishing the league with 10 members, the conference adopted the current Atlantic 10 name in 1982.
Further membership changes saw the league expand to its maximum of 16 members. From 1997 through 2006, the league also operated
None of these institutions played football in the A-10 during their tenure as full members.

PSU wanted the eastern teams to form the Eastern 8 into a major sports conference of all sports but Pitt, BC and SU said we want Big East as they were basketball only at the time. If only they had listened the East would be a football power and not the ACC.
Maryland, Miami, FSU and VPI would be members of that conference today.
Marshall is nothing more than an after thought to WVU. Kind of like a fart in a public place where you leave behind quickly because of the stench.
