Coach of the Raiders when they became the "Raiders". Won a Super Bowl and numerous runs in the NFL playoffs.

Became even more legendary during his broadcast career.

Madden was the best. Turducken, circling whatever on a screen, and talking to all us idiots.

did not like him in the 70s as a steelers fan, but i remember reading in sports illustrated after darrell stingley was paralyzed how madden visited him in the hospital. and i think it was often. we had a neighbor who played for the patriots at the time and so i had a passing interest.

I had the opportunity to meet him when I was about 19. I was working as a bus boy in college & his bus pulled in one night on his way to Canton for the HOF game. I was lucky enough to get to visit with him for a little bit here & there that evening. Super nice guy.

He is tough guy football personified. The Raiders were my team from the old AFL league days. Tough as nails, classic battles with the Chiefs and Steelers. Only 10 years coaching and then hit it big with his name on a game I never even saw much less played. I will remember his corny sayings and his use of the illustrator. He was one of the all time greats.

I watched a lot of games in which I cared little for either team, but only to listen to Madden. The end of quite an era.

Just ordered a handful of 8x10 photos of Madden. Going to give one of Stabler and Madden, that is autographed by both, to a co-worker mine. This guy has over 60+ Raiders jerseys.

I was wondering if he was on his death bed with all of the tributes I was seeing on sports programming the past month. One news story said, "he died unexpectedly". He was 85 and had been obese for at least 50 of those years. I'm not sure what was unexpected about him dying. Loved him on TV. Sounded like a great guy. That era of players and coaches will never be duplicated IMO in football and baseball. Now most of them are all about themselves.

I'm smiling just thinking about John Madden. He brought a lot of joy to people.

What an A-hole! Thousands of black athletes have made millions playing football. I would say hundreds of thousands have been able to acquire college education thanks to football.

Why any sane person believes this drivel is mind boggling to me.

My parents lived in the same neighborhood as John’s sister. My mother and her were friends. I am guessing fellow bridge players. Whenever John was in the Seattle area he would visit his sister. I remember his visits would not become known until after he had left. I don’t think he wanted to draw attention to himself and be a big distraction.

He had such a huge impact on football. I can remember him in his short sleeve white shirt and black tie on the sidelines when he was coaching the Raiders. He was pretty animated during the game. He always made football fun. Hell he made life fun. Sad to see him go.
