A young fella that works for me is a huge Carolina fan and he recently reached out to Berry on Instagram only to get attacked by Joel soon after. The young man expressed his admiration for Berry and the tar heels and at first everything was fine. However, apparently asking Berry what he would do if he couldn't play in the NBA was enough to Berry to call him a piece of **** fan. It surprised me, and it really bothered this kid. I mean, I hate the holes, but I thought Berry was better than that.

that really surprise me.....I'm shocked that hasn't leaked out and become a big deal. I'm with you. I thought he was better than that.

Did your co-worker go back after him for such a comment? Would have been funny if he did.

Not surprised just look at how he acts always pushing and shoving other players.Never have understood the love for this kid on our board.
I disagree. He is a good player and super competitive. It may come off as him actually being an a-hole, but we have one of those guys too and we all love him.
The exchange with the kid about going pro is a bad look. I'm not sure I would be sweet to someone who asked me "what would you do if you can't achieve the dream you've held your entire life"? I'm not trying to justify it. I'd hope I could come up with a nice way of dancing around the question, but maybe I wouldn't.
The academic scandal aside (which, presumably Berry has had no part in) I respect Joel Berry and I think it speaks volumes that he comes out in support of his coach like this.

I respect him too. I do not think we're getting an accurate account of what was said.

The real irony of this new revelation is the inside source for the investigation.

Marty Blazer was the agent responsible for funneling money in 2010 to UNC football players -- read AFAM students.

Anyone trying to portray UNC in the positive here is delusional. REALLY delusional.

So it is going to come out that UNC is involved and anyone who thinks this isn't the case is really delusional?

I don't think it's 'love' for Joel Berry....maybe just some rationality, more than anything. We tend to (always) see the worst in rivals.

Here's what we know about Berry. He's never been in trouble and he's a really good player. I'm not a fan of him because of who he plays for....so I don't need to make stuff up in mind (like UNC fans do) to hate on him.

As for the second-hand story someone alluded to above....I'm going to assume it's not true until proven otherwise. I'd do the same thing if it was a Duke player someone was making those claims about.

UNC fans are nuts. They are crowing about this tweet from the mountaintops, while maintaining that anyone who points out that they are neck deep in the biggest single school scandal ever just can't "get over" that they won a meaningless basketball title.

I honestly wonder... do they REALLY feel this way... like, do they REALLY believe that having guys in their jersey put the orange ball through a hoop more than guys wearing a different color jersey is the most important thing? Do they REALLY not get that there are more important things than winning?

To clarify. UNC seems to think that their program is in the clear because their program is spotless. However, this investigation is based on the testimony of a convicted felony for funneling money to players in their football program.

I know some people are questioning the validity of my story. All I can do is say I saw the messages he sent the young man through Instagram on his phone. You can believe me or don't. I don't really care. I know it happened. I don't have direct access to a 19 year old kid's phone to send you a link. Plus, I am technologically handicapped and wouldn't even have the slightest clue as to how to do it anyway. I trust the young fella that works for me. He hasn't lied to me yet. Plus, he is one of the biggest Carolina fans I have met. Not trying to be confrontational. I'm an honest person. I value integrity. All I ask is that you trust that I believe what I read. Somebody mentioned if the kid responded. He told him, "cool story bro". Which is pretty sarcastic and I told him I wouldn't have said that. Again, I wasn't on here trying to start anything. Just wanted to mention a story that is true. Whether you want to believe it or not, it is.

First off I believe your story - I have no reason not to.
Rereading this, it sounds to me the exchange could have gone something like this:
The young fella: "Hey Joel, big UNC fan here, big fan of yours. Go Tar Heels."
Berry: "Hey thanks man. Go Heels."
a few exchanges
Young fella: "Hey, what are you going to do if you don't make the NBA"?

Now, I think if I'm Berry, I'd probably be a little defensive and think this guy is trolling me. Not saying it's what happened. Could imagine it being something like that.

Yep. Hey , Duke could get dinged. Ya never know. But wtf are unx'ers thinkin' about? An agent...AGENT!...already known for ties to unx is involved. This is the same school who had a de facto agent ( John Blake ) as an "associate head coach." They had an agent teaching class. A female softball player there was an agents' runner delivering cash to jocks. Rodney Blackstock anyone? He was an agent...mixed up with PJ. Geez Louise , no kiddin' , if it was Duke? I'd be crappin' myself. Seriously. And keep in mind , this Blazer dude is mentioned right outta the gate. The holes , though sanctioned at the time , coulda been hit much harder. They tried to paint all that activity with a spin..."Predatory agents take advantage of innocent kids yada yada yada" an' let it go at that. My azz. Again , what are these guys lickin' their chops for? I'd be waitin' on the other shoe to drop.

It was very similar to that actually. And I understand Berry being defensive. I just thought it was a ****** way to respond to a kid who is a fan. Of course, I need to remember Berry is a young'n himself still. I don't think he is a bad kid. In fact, I like Berry. I just think he was nasty to a kid I know and like so that bothered me. And I really just wanted to share the story with you guys. Thanks for the vote of confidence dukephysics.

found this gem on the main board. Sorry in advance if already posted, but Joel has had too much nanner puddin.

What a joke of a tweet......

Wholeheartedly agree w/Topps!!! Berry was critical of K after the GOAT banned the players from locker room mid-season, basically saying he didnt think it was right. Lost ALL respect for him at that point. He doesnt play for Duke, and his comments to Andrew Carter of the N&O were out of line, and frankly none of his business. Shortly thereafter we whipped Berry & co at our place. That was truly a gratifying win after he questioned our coach publicly.

Hey if you play for a cheater like Roy, keep your mouth shut about other coaches strategies and tactics son. OFC

Berry also had this to say about Grayson....

“I see a different side of Grayson just from when I played with him and everything,” Berry said. “I know he’s not that kind of guy that everyone has made him out to be.”

I think Berry is probably a really good kid. He just plays for the wrong team. Let's not pretend we haven't had our own players at Duke who might have made similar comments in the past.

I don't really remember what Berry said, to be honest, all I recall is thinking the comments were relatively minor and rivalry-speak. Those are things that make it fun, too. But yes, beating them at our place felt pretty good at the time.

We werent talking about Duke players who made comments in the past about actions taken by opposing coaches. We were talking about Joel Berry.

I am more bothered by what he said about an OPPOSING COACH (Coach K) than I am his comments about one of his peers, because it shows a total lack of respect for one of the greatest coaches in all of sports ever, a true ambassador for the game, and a man who has helped lead a drive against cancer.....

I didn't really think it showed a "total lack of respect" at all. I doubt K feels that way, either.

We disagree, as we usually do. It was certainly unwise for him to be critical of Berry to be critical of K, especially prior to GAME ONE vs UNC at Cameron. Human nature suggests the intense fire that burns inside K didnt forget it.....

You have your opinion and I have mine. We are both entitled to our views, and at the end of the day neither is superior to the other.

I think Berry is a good guy. I think he sticks up for and admires his coach -- I think loyalty is important. I think he lacks knowledge of the investigation and his tweet is ill-timed. It would be good if players (current or past) should take a moment of pause and just STFU until the smoke clears!

Hope you're reading this JWill....

He wasn’t all that critical, though. Besides, I think K’s intensity when it comes to UNC wasn’t harbored by anything Joel Berry said....especially something so minor.

I don't know why anyone would defend or hate on Berry. He's a good player for the cheaters and is capable of helping Duke lose to them so I do't like him even a little bit. What I don't grasp is why anyone would say he is a good kid or an ******* jerk. It's not like anyone here knows him personally. Maybe we have never seen him pull a Grayson on the court but that doesn't mean he doesn't go ballestic elsewhere. I also don't care about anything he says about our coach because he doesn't know K either.

Like I said we have DIFFERING VIEWS, and neither one of us are mind readers. I dont think any of K's players would be critical of UNC's coach for how he handles his players. Berry should have taken the high road and not commented.

Believe me I happen to live in NORTH CAROLINA, and had a Duke kid said something critical of Roy's discipline, the media would have made it FAR from "minor."
