Tom Penders of former UConn game told me a year ago that Jacob Young would be the key to the Rutgers season. He was instrumental in tutoring him from a basketball perspective at Texas and by surmise played a role in him landing at Rutgers due to his connection with Steve. He has a lot of John Gwynn feel to his game. It is irrefutable to me at this point that Rutgers will Dance.Their seed and NCAA prospects,in my opinion hinge on how Jacob progresses. He can be instant offense on a team which at time needs such an injection.

Tom Penders was a candidate for a job here at some point I think.

I think irrefutable is a strong word to use at this point. There’s no doubt that IF we win Sunday it seems we are on the way there. Still need to win a game or two on the road and know that we will probably lose at least one more game at home this season. Remember we haven’t even clinched .500’yet.

1 more? we haven't lost AT HOME yet lol.

Young's willingness to change his game last few weeks has been HUGE.

Yes. Winnable game at home. Don’t want to lose that and THEN lose to Iowa on the road. I don’t like that matchup.

Their big guy scares me muchly. We see what happens when Myles picks up early fouls like the last two games.
The big guy is good. But So are Myles and shaq. I think I more confident with Carter so he can pull Myles out if he picks up a quick foul and ( like he did last night) and rotate the two. Would be nice if we could get Duke to the point where he could Also give 8-10 mins a game

Carter has improved his D and can score around the basket. He's quietly been solid

Nailed it

Young has the ability to score when things are tight and adds a fourth double digit scorer to baker, Harper, yeboah (and Johnson is almost there).

Even last night, his shots were right there

If he can be a steady 12-15 points a night ..we are going to be in for a fun run this coming March

And as of late JY has shown a willingness to get the assist which makes him a huge threat for opposing defenses....very nice to see him getting the rust off!

Penders (like Martinelli) big timed RU when we were interested, but who am I to hold a grudge.
Good to see RU72 back in the fold. Can LCP be far behind? LFBall? I just learned the Jellyman unfortunately passed away. He'd be loving this run and this team.

Penders was at the finish line - Martinelli never got out of the gate

Penders was at Texas and we were two years into the Big East ('97). Seems he was very close to coming, but decided to stick with the UT job. Funny thing is that Penders career took a downturn almost immediately after rejecting the Rutgers offer - he got fired from Texas a year or two later for leaking information about a kid who was transfering I think - he wound up at GW and had an ok run there.

I had an exchange with him on twitter a couple of years ago - he regretted not coming to RU (certainly with 20/20 hind site)

Penders would have crushed it at RU - he was a top notch coach and recruiter - it was another Fred Grunniger failure, as we turned to Kevin Bannon, who was this close to landing Jason Williams - but failed

Please accept my apology. I read it on the football board about a week ago. I am very happy to be wrong.

No worries; you don't owe me an apology. I had read that too but then learned it was a mistakenly reported as such.

Can we at lest spell Phil MARTELLI's name right? Unless there's a Martinelli guy I don't know about.

As a casual basketball fan, who has watched every game since the Nebraska game. Jacob Young caught my attention after that game. Since then, he looks to be a player who can score at will driving to the rim. I love his passion and energy.

I'm not sure if it was brought up on this board, it may have been lost in the recent Geo dunk excitement - but one play by him that really stuck out recently was the break away reverse lay up after recovering Geo's steal at 3:36 left in the first half.
