IZOD center for Big 10 Games

With little chance of a new basketball facility on the horizon, any chance we play Big 10 games in a larger venue closer to NYC? Could draw more interest and possibly show incoming players a chance for a larger local stage.

Why would Rutgers want to play home games 35 miles from campus?

And playing at the Meadowlands does absolutely nothing to address the facility problems that the basketball program faces, since the facility problems have to do with lack of practice facilities, training facilities, and meeting rooms.

We are not going to get a massive influx of funds for the program the next 5 years and likely beyond. The RAC for all intents and purposes could be a practice facility if you put it in College Park, Maryland. Coach Jordan made reference to how insufficient our facilities/funding is at a post-game press conference this year. I think we need to work outside the conventional box. We are not recruiting particularly well and attendance will be abysmal until we start recruiting. If we can show we play in an 18,000 seat arena close to NYC for games against the BIG 10 we can push being the New York Area team and possibly increase attendance and exposure without spending big money. Just a thought.

No it can't. For exactly the same reasons that it is an insufficient practice facility today.

The problem with the RAC is not as a gameday facility (with some concession upgrades, it is fine). The problem with the RAC is it has no non-gameday space. Rutgers needs multiple practice floors, training facilities, meeting rooms, etc. None of that is solved by playing games somewhere else.

We will NEVER draw well, at IZOD or MSG, until we're a championship-level/elite program (or for something "special" like the NIT finals...).

I have learned two things so far. 1) The IZOD center is apparently closed. Question: Does that mean it is closed forever or just in political limbo? 2) That a suitable practice facility requires multiple courts/meeting and training rooms. I was always under the impression the RAC was looked as inferior for gameday experience. It would seem to me a training facility would require a lot less money than a new gameday arena. Is it possible to construct something like that for under 3-5 million dollars with land set aside by the school?

I enjoyed the Zoloft center comment. Very funny. In truth I have not been paying too much attention to RU sports over the past several months because of bad news regarding football program and not enjoyable to watch mens' basketball. I wish I had the $100 million to give but not likely in my lifetime. About 10 years ago I used to organize large tailgates for my neighbors and college friends. Enjoyed doing it but just got to be too much. Love watching Rutgers and this was just a thought on trying to save some coin for the school and give us more local exposure in NYC and make us more attractive to recruits. Thanks for the input. Even though I cannot most meetings, considering joining touchdown club and CC club to stay up-to-date with programs.

I do not want this. There is really nothing wrong with the RAC from a venue perspective. When people talk about faculties with the RAC they are referencing practice courts, meeting room, weight room, ect.

I'm not sure if there's been an update, but when they closed it in MArch last year, they said it would go dark for 2 years while they decided what to do with it.

I remember the idea back about 10 years ago about building a new arena in New Brunswick by the train station. I think that is dead. sometime in the 2020s when we have money we may see an arena built in the Yellow lot by the Hale Center. Many other schools do this where the arenas are next to the football fields to share parking lots.

A laugh a minute when it comes to discussing arena options. The best answer always has been to do nothing and let the topic be ignored for another five years.Just think of all the money that has been saved to spend on recruiting and better coaching .Maybe not the case.

I have looked at the plans for new practice facility and it is impressive. If I had to guess the earliest that money would be raised and facility constructed would be 5 years from now. If IZOD is just sitting there, why not use it? Why not look at structures that are intact right now as alternative to making program look more attractive to recruits and fans. AD Hobbs helped forge construction of Prudential Arena in Newark and got it done. Why not think outside the box and try to create some excitement for a program that needs a shot in the arm.

WHY not? Because it's:

- not ON campus
- NOWHERE near campus
- NOWHERE near out students
- DOESN'T have the amenities that are necessary, with The Rock and MSG nearby, to draw people willing to pay "big arena" ticket prices

..and we can't even get 5,000 of our OWN fans to our ON CAMPUS facility right now. You honestly think we're going to do better 35 miles away? No, not a chance, not now, and not for a long time.
