Is Fairfield going to break the RPI?

Currently, Fairfield is #1 overall in RPI with a month to go in the regular season. They are undefeated at 20-0, and somehow have the #29 SOS even though they have only played 2 teams in the Top 50.

In other weirdness with their schedule, they had 8 games postponed (presumably due to COVID) with no apparent plan to make them up. They also have played just 7 innings in 12 of their 20 games.

I’m honestly not sure what you do with them. Unlikely as it would be, if they finish with only 1 or 2 losses, are they a national seed?

Or Louisville maybe. They were top 8 by BA last week with an RPI in the 60s. Currently sitting at 59 with 2 quad 1 wins. But yeah if you ignore Fairfield you have to admit the RPI has serious flaws.

RPI has always had very serious flaws. I know the selection committee is supposed to use it, but I really think in baseball they ignore it. As they should.

Only one of MSU or Ole Miss had a chance to host a Regional. This weekend went a long way for us. The is a very good chance we are a top 8 seed but have to travel for the Regional and Super Regional. The could end up being at neutral spot. Just listening to the announcers for different games.

I would say a very slim chance of that happening. MSU will be one of the 16 regional host sites, and therefore will almost assuredly at least host a regional.

No but they are not playing as many OOC as others so thats a factor. But you have 3 ACC teams in the top 20 RPI

LOL....they literally have tree limbs in the field of play behind the outfield fence.

Something else strange....they have a 4-game series against Manhattan (at Manhattan) this upcoming weekend. Those will be the first road games they have played this year.

It’s pretty much the same deal as Colgate in the men’s basketball tourney. They were 14-1 and had a Top 10 NET ranking and the NCAA gave them a 14 seed.

My guess is they may give Fairfield the benefit of being a 3 seed instead of a 4. But that’s the extent of it. And they probably still have to win their conference tournament to get in.

The question is how is it even possible for them to be ranked as high as they are? SOS is 2/3 of the formula, and road games count as 1.3 wins vs 0.6 for home wins. They have only played 2 top 50 teams all year, and neither team is ranked as high as their overall SOS rank. I can understand how a winning percentage of 1.000 keeps the home / road splits from coming into play, but the SOS side of it just doesn’t add up at all.

It is a glitch, right? Their SOS is somehow stronger than their nonconference SOS, which makes zero sense. Obviously their non-conference strength of schedule would have to be much, much harder than their conference schedule in order for them to have a SOS of 29th. I guess there just aren't enough non-conference games this year for RPI to be valid?
