The thing about sports uniforms is that you are never going to please everyone. It's kind of like stoking a fire or selecting a performer for the Super Bowl halftime show -- everybody has a different opinion.
But to me, the most important thing was simply doing something different. We are turning the page from the McCaffery era and embarking on a new direction under McCollum. The way you look sets the tone for who you are, and I think it's important that we come out with a new look, not just in the way our roster is constructed, but also in the way we are dressed.
It's pretty clear that these new uniforms are simply a Nike stock uniform with our colors, branded wordmark, and logo. And that's fine. On another thread a few weeks ago, someone said it takes more than a year to get a new custom uniform developed, and I don't doubt that to be the case. Given our timetable, the only option was to buy off the rack, so to speak. So we went with a very classic design.
Yes, they look similar to Michigan's. I'll bet if you look around, you can find more than a dozen teams wearing something very similar to these, just using different colors, logos, and wordmarks. Like I said, it's a classic look. But here's the thing with basketball uniforms: In contrast to football, very, very few college basketball uniforms are particularly distinctive. I mean, other than the color scheme, can anyone really recall from memory what uniforms Michigan State wore last year? Or Illinois? Or Minnesota? (etc.). In fact, I think it's when teams try too hard to be "distinctive" that they end up getting in trouble, and come up with something that looks kind of dumb.
So, the tl;dr version: These uniforms are fine. They may not be a home run, but they are solid. And at the end of the day, I think we are all more interested how the team plays in them.
If nothing else, at least we have something new to argue about.
