I can't see how this matters until we start BIG play. It's just throwing darts right now. Guess it might help at tourney time but we're going to have to win BIG games to get in

That's sweet, but they're ranked #16 in the poll that matters most in March.

That being the (initial) NET Rankings released by the NCAA.
Listened to BM speak prior to the season. I know most coaches are aware of manipulating the NET to the best of your ability via scheduling. He really hammered home the fact that you need to put it to these cupcakes and point differential makes a difference. It was refreshing to hear someone speak so candidly about this. And maybe it's more common than I realized. But the fact we are ranked so high in the net and KenPom are great to see this early in the season. Now lets take care of business in December!

Also Maryland is on the other side of the coin with their computer metrics. #200 in NET & #94 in KenPom. This is a game that could really hurt our ranking with a loss. More so than MSU & ISU (barring a complete blowout)

Being ranked gives you instant exposure. When your team cracks the Top 25, your games start showing up on national sports shows like SportsCenter, and your score appears right there in the Top 25 crawl instead of being buried in the Big Ten breakdown. All of that visibility builds name recognition, and that matters for recruiting. It’s especially valuable when you have a new coach who isn’t widely known yet, because the ranking puts the program in front of more eyes and helps shape the narrative in a positive way.

Yeah, they not only need to beat Maryland, but by a big margin on the scoreboard as well.

Like you quoted BM as saying, need big point differentials against the Q2-3-4 teams, especially when you are the home team.
