Input from assistant coaches

Apologies if this has been discussed, I don’t get on here as often as I used to. With all of the sports world and fan base knowing our offense is outdated and lineups we are using are ineffective, where do the assistant coaches come in to play? Surely guys like Antigua, Chin, Turner know that Cal isn’t running the team in a way that puts us in position to succeed. Which is most likely?

A. They agree with how Cal is running things.
B. They disagree but are afraid to say so and confront him.
C. They disagree and have confronted Cal but Cal isn’t changing.

I would think Antigua has known him long enough that he can be real with Cal and Chin last year didn’t seem to fear going at it with Cal. Maybe some of this is why Lucas wanted out.

Have you ever worked at a job where the boss is the authoritarian type or is the "boss" in terms of my way or the highway type of management? That style does facilitate "yes men", or I'll collect a good paycheck while I look for another job, or simply no opportunity for input because the boss won't be open to hearing it. Assistant coaches are employees hired by Cal and thus have to follow his instructions. Chin I think got into it once with Cal that we observed in a game but otherwise it is difficult to know what goes on behind the scenes.

I remember an interview a few years back where Cal said to the effect he wanted to be the only voice the players hear on the bench. He was insinuating too many coaches talking distracted the players.

This. They're there to recruit and on game day just be decoration. Cal desperately needs to hire a basketball mind as an assistant. It's pretty obvious by now that "coach cal" was actually just a face and promoter but the basketball was actually coached by robic

Body language can be important. I have been observing the body language of Antigua and Coleman on the sideline during games. If you do the same, you have the answer to the question you posed in your OP. Check it out.

And BTW, Coleman and Antigua are not necessarily thinking exactly the same thing. Of the two, Antigua owns a much longer relationship with Calipari. But both are clearly frustrated and humiliated.

Cal still thinks he can win big just by having better players. So, recruit better than anybody else and you should be on top, is his philosophy. That doesn't work anymore.
