That’s pretty much how it goes for any job. You always interview multiple candidates, for optics if not for any other reason.
I suppose if Nick Saban or Sean Payton walked in the door you could go ahead and sign them up.

I'm pretty sure the State employment regulations require you to interview "all qualified applicants", or some such wording as that. Would hate to have chizzrick file a suit saying we didn't even consider him. When all is said and done, the coach works for the state and HR policies must be followed.

UT probably thought they had Mullen wrapped up until Florida came calling. You have to have back up plans.

From someone that hires people for a living: it’s a process. You do the right thing by folks by giving them an interview if they’re interested and create a pool of candidates. What if during this process by interviewing someone like Monken or Calhoun- you uncover a jam-up S&C coach or a ST coach that is a great recruiter or developer or talent that we otherwise wouldn’t have known about? And imagine if we didn’t interview these folks how bad that could hurt us in the future if it leaked we didn’t give candidates the time of day? Cohen is doing his job. Leave no stone unturned.

Probably a few reasons. 1) Courtesy interviews are very common. I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine kind of deal. We aren’t hiring the Air Force or army coaches...we are doing their agents a favor by getting their names out there. 2) things can change with coaching searches. Nothing is a done deal until the paper work is signed. Cohen can’t be caught with his pants down. 3) Leverage. If Napier knows he’s the only candidate we are talking too he will squeeze more money out of us. That’s my best guess.

Because Napier's not a done deal. All the rumors are just speculation.

Why are we interviewing others?

How do you know we are continuing to interview prospects? Just because Paul or Gene say we are doesn't mean we actually are. If, and I think he is, Napier is a done deal I would expect a fair amount of BS to be floating around until his bowl game is over.

I cannot ever remember a coach filing suit for not getting an interview..

No offense but that does not seem to me to be much of a consideration.

Mullen never even signed a memorandum of understanding with Tennessee. He was always using them as leverage to force Florida’s hand. Oldest trick in the book.

This right here. Got to interview multiple candidates, including at least 1 minority candidate.

If memory serves correctly, TSUN got in a little warm water for not interviewing a minority candidate when they hired Nutt right away.

UT absolutely thought they had Dan Mullen wrapped up. They scheduled the freaking press conference to announce it & had to cancel it at the last minute.

You don't want to screw around with the state employment board. Not your concern? It for Damn Sure is Mark Keenum's concern. I understand you have no concern for employment rules. I thank Dr. Keenum for his concern and willingness to follow their rules that assure we don't 17 up, regardless of whether anyone ever sued the state.

I wouldn't want Saban! He would never win at State. He couldn't stack the deck like he has at LSU and Bummer.
