... changing nothing else on the current squad, a lights out guy like QD. What impact would it have on our record, team dynamics, etc.?

A QD type of shooter gets this team to the NIT I believe. Corey doesn't have anyone who can consistently put the ball in the basket on a kick out when he drives. We also don't have anyone who can consistently get us 2 at the line if they get fouled.

NIT for sure. Has to be a scorer that will also D up. You can't have only 4 guys playing D like we do now

The thing I loved about Douby was how fluid the guy was... off the dribble, from behind the arc (sometimes wayyyy behind the arc), and from the charity stripe. So smooth and deceptively quick.

His performance against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome where he scored over 30 points was outstanding .Sadly, Rutgers still lost the game.

Forget a Douby-like, NBA draft pick type score. If RU had just ONE of their WF's be a reliable 10-12 point scorer and 35% 3-point shooter, RU would probably have at least 2 more wins, maybe as many as 4 more wins. Which would mean RU would be sitting at 15-10 (4-8) to 17-8 (6-6), and talking about the NIT bubble.

If RU had a Douby-like player, added to the current team - not even the Junior year Douby (who averaged 26 points per game), but a SOPHOMORE year Douby-like scorer, who actually AVERAGED 16-17 points per game ... RU might have beaten either or both of Miami and/or SHU, and might be in the top half of the Big Ten in the standings, and an NCAA bubble team.

Of course, this is all fantasy. And RU is not even likely to have such a player NEXT season, either - unless Thiam really explodes.

It's crazy how we've had some really good players since the last time we danced, but we just haven't been able to put the right roster together with the right coach, at the right time.

Which is why I'm puzzled as to why Pikiell used a 2017 ship on a backup Juco PG that doesn't score.

Because looking ahead he feels he'll get 1 more year out of Sanders and this way he'll have a guy who's been in his system for a year and can step in to fill the void.

I'm of the opinion that most of the time with JC guys you get 1 good year.

The first year is an adjustment to playing at a higher level.

They might go .500.

This men's B.B. team won't win another game this year.

The football team is even further behind.

RU was cucked by the B1G. Promises of future riches. That might not even be there the way the dynamics are changing in the cable TV business.

It's sad really.

I believe the JUCO Point guard will be very good passer and a tough defensive player. Coach knows what he is doing. Let coach make the decisions.

We already had QD. Did that get us to the dance . . . . So rule that out.

But with a 1st round pick scorer, we might win a handful more games. Maybe get to the NIT, though I doubt it. Other teams would absolutely swarm that guy in every game all the time, because he would be the only true scorer we have.

This all assumes....
A. we got him the ball in the right spaces
B. doesn't hurt the offense of other players

I know there are only 5 guys on the court so an addition of 1 really good one can really help. This team, offensively, needs a lot of little things. Most importantly threats to make and take perimeter shots.

I see people complaining Mike had an off day. The flip side of Nigel being successful is no looks for Mike. We had a lot of possessions where it was either Nigel or Corey with the ball in their hands looking to score. Only 1 basketball.

vs Purdue ....non starter Johnson magically stepped up with 23 pts
Freeman was his usual workmanlike 12 pts/5 REBs

the rest of the starters(4 guys) shot 20%.....went 6-30
Corey had a booming 7pts
Our 7 ft center CJ had a stellar 2 pts/4REBs

other than our 6th man Johnson,,,a booming 6 pts chipped in by 6 guys off the bench(3-7 combines)

AND STILL WE WERE IN IT a huge part of the game

We need everyone to step up & have more consistency on O

I might ask this question again to myself in 2-3 years. We are at the stage now that we think there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Until we see the players that can win here on the RAC floor we just don't see that light. My fear is we never make it out of the tunnel in this conference.

Junior year QD would add 4 to 5 wins so maybe we're looking at 17-14 or 18-13...I guess that's NIT bubble.

Like I was mentioning in the other thread - one more scorer, we would be a solid NIT team, but a superstar center (like the Purdue center (or Bailey of 78-79) and we are in the NCAA..hard to come by those players, of course, but they are out there..

Correct

If we had Rickey shields playing the three spot we would have four more wins THIS year. I have Zero doubt about that

Douby as a junior ...with sanders ?6 or 7 seed in the NCAA tournament ....we have far more talent on this team than the 2005-2006 team that went 18-13 and the NIT

NO WAY. WRONG!

Senior year WITH Douby they finished 10-19. He finished his career 35.7% from the field.

There is only 1 :basketball:. There are egos. Ricky was 6'4''. Put Ricky on this team does our defensive suffer?

We would still be in last place. Teams would double him every time he touched the ball and we don't have any other options to go to.

You guys are completely missing how teams are guarding us and how much opposing defenders are hedging the middle from the wing when we have guys outside the arc

This is making us running our half court offense so much more difficult

One credible solid shooter capable of 12-13 ppg from the three point (like shields m) line would help the spacing so much for the other four to operate.

Can't emphasize enough how much it hurting the total half court offense

You are missing how little talent this team has. This isn't some sort of unique animal that has rarely existed and that, unlike most others, can simply be fixed by one scorer. There is a historic dearth of talent for RU and that has to be fixed, not be turned around by a single player.

With all due respect, you're off the wall here. Of course Douby would add a handful of wins and put us on NIT bubble. However, for a 6 or 7 seed with our non conference schedule we would need 22 wins min. Douby is not worth 9 more wins...lol

This conversation never seems to end .What changes is the names of the players but the end result for the team is another losing season. This must stop and the only way it will is with better recruiting.

How is mike williams any different than ricky shields? It is more on the penetrators to be a threat to pass when making drives to the basket.

and in college basketball you need to have 4 threats from beyond the arc on the floor. good teams we see beat you with penetration, kick out, 1 swing pass and open 3. the penetrator in many cases doesn't even get the assist.

If we were a average free throw shooting team we would have won 4-5 additional games. Add a average shooting three would have been 2-3 games and another scorer or finisher would be 1-2 games, that your eight to ten games which have made us a bubble.

I stand by statements ....

Oh...by the way...if you think I'm that far off....we were 7/8 games WORSE without Douby the following year with essentially the same team.
