you can mark this down
he isn't leaving
Even if Rhule is dead set on staying at Nebraska on October 13th 2025, it doesn't mean there isn't a job that opens that wouldn't be enticing, or more money, or a better situation. The reality is Dannen deserves his own hire and that is a huge deal for an AD. This makes Rhule extra expendable, and he knows that. The Penn State job will be filled by someone else, but there will be another 20 jobs that open...it was inevitable that coaches would become more expendable and their ridiculous pay more scrutinized now that extra money is needed for players and the idea of "coaching" someone up is not necessary considering a guy can just leave for a bigger paycheck, to be closer to home, or a better chance to win.

I bet Franklin takes at least a year off. If I had that payout I would find a cushy game day show and just talk football
I cannot relate to the coaches who get a big buyout, do the talking head thing for awhile and get back into coaching. I can understand them, I just can't relate to them if that makes sense. I get they like the excitement, adrenalin, being around the kids, the perks, etc. If I got $49M, plus had been banking $7M/year I would retire, live my life interestingly and peacefully and help people I love and my charities with my money and time. For the record, I can't relate to gazillionaire senators and representatives who keep working into their 80s either.

I don’t think he is going to PSU but just opinion. But in theory he did go. Would PSU owe UNL money for a buyout for him leaving?

If Rhule leaves, when does he leave? The minute he is offered? After the Iowa game? Switch locker rooms at halftime against PSU? Let’s say we finish 11-1, does he stay for B1G championship and CFP?

Good people aren't major college football coaches. They are coaching their kids or coaching middle school or high school for 25 cents an hour. Major college guys get high off of the attention, power, and the money...this hasn't necessarily always been the case but the ridiculous media attention and salaries just feeds the egos of the modern guys.

Assuming we don’t make the playoffs, after Iowa.

I told you all there was a good chance Rhule would leave this year.. haters gonna hate.

It hasn't actually happened yet, but I think it's very very possible.. and he could take a bunch of key players with him.

Feel bad for the fans.. they deserve better.. they deserve their Huskers Identity back.

I pray Troy hires someone who will actually have the balls to return us to a running team the occasionally throws the play action pass down field.

As Rhule complained, we don't have the NIL money to put together an elite team at every position. And then to have the booster support to do that every year, increasing as prices go up. It's not how Nebraska is going to have success on the field.

With a running team, you don't have to spend so much on receivers and throwing QB's.. you can build around the best feature running backs, and offensive and defensive linemen, as well as the defensive backfield. Tom was able to recruit a few 4 stars, but rarely did we get 5 star players like some of the other blue bloods.

Anyway, I hope Troy has his head screwed on straight about how to make Nebraska successful consistently, from year to year by hiring the kind of coach that will do this. If he hires another passing coach, it's an instant fail, because once again, you don't have the money to buy the team to do that sort of thing.

I hope we could convince LaTeef to stay, as that offense might suit him more.

No. We act like we are Nebraska and we go take someone else's head coach. Cignetti, McGuire, kiffen or fleck

This place would burn down at the mention of Fleck! I'm in for the comedy! Actually, Fleck is way better than any of the doofus crowd around here will admit, but I can't help but hate him. That face. That persona. The capri pants.

Dannen doesn't deserve to "have his own guy". Dannen's job is to administrate the athletics programs of UNL. If "the guy" he has is doing his job correctly, he should start to look for invented reason to fire him. It is this mindset that is contributing to everything we do not like about college athletics.

I would like to see what he could do at a program that has a following and the resources. His teams always fight. But I get it even though I could turn a blind eye to his antics knowing I'm going to see Nebraska be a hard hitting team. What do you think about McGuire? Nobody wants to play TT right now imo. They punish teams.

McGuire is a Rhule guy kinda? I admit I know nothing about him other than his kid is a very mediocre WR coach. It sounds like TT would be a hard place to leave right now with the Cody Campbell billions at work.

He coached for him at Baylor and yea Rhule gave his kid a job. And yes TT is setting money on fire right now.

Ok, Fleck it is because I got a funny feeling.

I never ever expected to feel the way I do about the possibility of losing Rhule.

NU hasn't lost a coach since Dana X Bible in the 50s AFAIK?

I feel very upset and a lot of anxiety. The man is incredible. We've been so lucky to have him.

Dylan's quotes make me feel better though

Rhule isn't leaving this year. Penn State is NOT going to settle for Rhule. The fanbase would lynch the AD if that happened. It's delusional to think he's the one Penn State wants, they want a real flash hire of someone who has been a national title contender before. BUT next year will be the first time to see if Rhule can actually capitalize on his 3-year rebuilding effort to have sustained success. Before he's always left for a new job before that was tested.

Now you could very well see Dana leave for a head coaching job once the coaching carousil kicks in at the end of the season.

Considering that PSU isn't going to make a hire "official" until December, the only way Rhule would get hired (he won't) is if he has a fantastic season here at Nebraska. I don't want him to leave, but if he goes 10-2 and takes the PSU job I'll be able to sleep at night. They're not gonna hire someone that just went 8-4 or worse at Nebraska. Especially if we lose to an interim-coached PSU.

The way Holgerson talks, it seems he has become allergic to head coaching. I think he has always been an OC at heart and likes solving the problem of the opposing defense. He did the HC thing, had some success, and then I think he didn't want to do it anymore, only he was still doing it. So he ended up getting fired. Could he be talked into doing the HC thing again? Bags of cash have a way of changing minds. But he has already made all of the money he can spend, and may have figured out that with age, you find the most valuable thing is the time you get to do the things you love to do. If you really dislike being a HC, all the money in the world is not going to make that better.

Time for the conspiracy theory about what happened last night. The team decided to take a dive so there was no way Penn State was going to take Matt Rhule. Now the only way to prove this is to have the players come forward after PSU hires a coach other than Matt Rhule. But most likely this has been a week full of distraction for the team and the blame this is squarely on Matt Rhule because he is the leader and he needed to do a better job about this. By losing this game Penn State will be looking for a better candidate for the head coach and nebraska can now focus on winning a few more games this season.
