How to bend NCAA Recruiting Rules

Kelsey Mitchell was obviously a very highly recruited high school play who signed with Ohio St four years ago. Shortly after she committed, OSU hired a new assistant coach named Mark MITCHELL. Coincidence? I think not.

Well Kelsey is gone and guess what? So is Mark Mitchell. Sounds a lot lot Little League where parents come in to make sure their kids get taken care of. But this was in reverse. Kelsey signing with OSU got her family taken care of.

Andy Landers did the same thing at University of Georgia years ago to get Tasha Butts. He hired her Mother as an assistant coach for the four years Tasha played and then they replaced her as soon as her daughter graduated.

A big difference is that (assuming he did his job) Mitchell was a qualified hire. Landers wasn't so lucky, and I think she was gone before her daughter, because she brought little to the job.

The NCAA has sort of hedged around wanting to ban this sort of thing, but I predict that, if they tried, someone would sue that they were being denied a job opportunity.
