How does the B12 bowl selection work?

I don't believe the conference "assigns" second tier bowls the same way the SEC does. Is there some "lee-way" in the bowl selection if teams are within a game or two of each other? IE, does the fourth place team automatically get the fourth place bowl?

The way it appears to me is If OU wins the the championship game they will be in the playoff. TCU will goto a NY6 game. Ok St will goto the Alamo. And we will get stuck in sh*t Orlando bowl playin an ACC team in Florida for like the 25th time in 20 years.

I'd love to fall to the cactus and play a P12 team or the Texas/Liberty bowls and get an SEC team--if possible.

The bowls pick the teams after consultation with the conference. Order of choices is Alamo, Orlando, Texas. Liberty, Cactus. Heart of Dallas. The only one that goes strictly by standings is the P12. The SEC does help place the teams. All the bowls can change depending on what happens in the championship game and if TCU gets a Cotton bid. Orlando is pretty much off the table. I personally do not want to go out to Arizona - let them take one of out teams that are much closer to them.

I think a bowl game in a sunshine state (speed state) would be great. Just don't send us back to the Pinstripper. You know what happened in NYC on that cold snowy Saturday! I really don't care who we play and what their record is. The thing is that WV must win the bowl game. So, match us against a 4-8 team if that's what it takes to get a W! Warez

Big 12 uses a true hierarchy to determine the selection order for its other six bowls.

Following is the selection order:

Big 12
  • Liberty (vs. SEC)
  • Alamo (vs. Pac-12)
  • Camping World (vs. ACC or Notre Dame)
  • Texas (vs. SEC)
  • Cactus (vs. Pac-12)
  • Heart of Dallas (vs. Conference USA)

Yes, there is leeway in the bowl selection. No, the 4th place team doesn't automatically go to the 4th place bowl. The Big 12 does have a selection order among its bowls. For example, the Alamo bowl is 1st, Russell Athletic bowl is 2nd, and so on. However, each bowl can select from any of the remaining teams. For example, the Alamo bowl could take Texas or West Virginia ahead of Oklahoma St if they wanted to.

Liberty is between Texas and Cactus.
