Wondering what everyone's opinions are on how the old district final format compared to new sub-state worked out?

I liked it a lot better than the old district final format. In the old district format either Creek Valley or Crawford would have qualified for the state tournament. Crawford was 9-17 going into sub-state, and Creek Valley was 13-14 going into sub-state. Both schools were absolutely destroyed in their sub-state game.

It’s not perfect but I suppose it’s better than the old format. Higher seeds in all classes should host not just A&B. I know it probably wouldn’t work in the other classes, but I do like how class A has the one fail-safe wildcard. Sometimes really good teams have an off night and it just comes at the worst time. I get it “great” teams don’t lose in crunch time, but in reality it happens all the time. Just my two cents.

I absolutely LOVE IT!! The regular season actually means something now.

Out of the 40 District Final games, there were what I would describe as 3 Upsets. Howells-Dodge, Lourdes, and Hartington were all significant underdogs in terms of Wild Card points. I have no idea what the deal was with Lourdes and Overton, but wow...what an upset there!

I know that people have been referencing (not just this thread) the .500 teams that would have gotten in had we used the old system. My argument is (and always has been) that we should look at the teams that actually make it to Lincoln under this system...that would have been left home under the old rules.

I am not a fan of any type of Wild Card system, as long as we seed the District Final games. Great decision here. They got it right.

You could also argue that the regular season means less now. You could go 25-0 in the regular season and lose 1 game in Districts and you are eliminated because there are no wildcards. I would like the substate format a lot more if every class had 1 wildcard like Class A.

My exact thoughts.

I think its going in the right direction. I would like to see them have set sites that the fans know where they are going ahead of time. Play class D in Kearney and play class C in Grand Island or something like that. If you had multiple games at one or two sites it could really make it feel like a state tournament game. I also like the fact that you have to win to get in.

I like your idea, but I can also see some people really push back on that idea as well. For instance in C2 boys, Ponca played Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. A lot of people might believe it's pretty stupid to have two schools that are about 50 miles apart drive all the way to Grand Island or Kearney to play one game.

I really like it overall, I think it has improved the state tournament field.

I do think there could be some tweaks yet in the sub-district round. I really like an idea posted in another thread for C and D:

Keep your 12 subdistricts, and take your top 12 power point teams and give them each a #1 seed in subdistricts, and then geographically assign the rest of the teams to the subdistricts like now. There might be a con to that method, but I'm just thinking out loud here. It might help prevent some of the immediate rematches from the subdistrict round in the district final round

You have to win to get to state...this is the way it should be. No wildcards at the tournament.

People put way too much stock in records, teams that are well coached get better as the season progresses. Some teams play tough schedules. The right teams win at districts and get to state.

Your point is certainly valid, but honestly...if you are 25-0, you will be either the 1 or 2 seed going into District Finals. If you can't beat the 16 or 15 team in District Finals, you likely didn't deserve to be there anyway. This deal is 100% set up for the top 8 teams in the State to get to Lincoln. I know that there can be extenuating circumstances surrounding upsets (sick players etc.), but for the most part I believe this format gets more deserving teams to Lincoln than the old system.

The 1 wildcard format is certainly not something I would oppose.

Just for fun, I looked at the BOYS side, and compared the State Tournament qualifiers with the final Points Leaders By Class statistics from the NSAA Website.

Class C1:
1 qualifier from outside the top 8 in power points being Boystown at 9

Class C2
1 qualifier from outside the top 8 in power points being Howells Dodge at 12

Class D1
3 qualifiers from outside the top 8...Lourdes at 22, Hartington at 12, Wauneta Palisade at 9

Class D2
0 qualifiers from outside the top 8 in power points

4 classes, 32 qualifiers, and only 1 team (Lourdes) that I would consider a shocker. I don't know what the circumstances were surrounding that Overton vs Lourdes game. However, I would much rather have 1 of 32 teams (Overton) left out than 3, 4, or 5 teams that simply got the lucky draw and end up in Lincoln as in years past.

Perfect system...no. There is no such thing. Progress...ABSOLUTELY!

I agree 100%. This system is much better than the previous system when it was based almost solely on geography. I like the class A system with 1 wildcard. Like "ClkTwr2011" mentioned, there are extenuating circumstances like illness and things like that, but in basketball there are also nights where the ball just won't go down, or you get 1 guy in foul trouble early. I understand that those things are part of the game, and one could argue that having one of those things happen (shots won't fall or a kid gets in foul trouble) should exclude you from qualifying.

Wasnt Milford in C1 outside the top 8 in point standings. They tied with Boys Town on wildcard points and are the 8 seed at state.

Just for funsies (and for legitimate comparing) if you have some spare time, do last year’s state tournament field. I’m curious how different this year is from last.

I actually tried to do that. The problem is that there is no Archive for the Point Leader By Class report. I would have to go team by team through it...and am just not up for that!!
