-------------

Cuts down the field of candidates quite a bit

Would imply it is either a non NCAA Tourney coach, or someone out of work you'd think....

Not Archie.
Yeah I know you were kidding but not everyone who suggested Archie was. There was as good a chance of you or me getting hired as Archie. Anyone who thought that was a remote possibility must not pay much attention.

Anyone who is still playing (NCAA/NIT etc..) is out.

Means Lonergan, Schmidt, Pikiell from the obvious list our out.

Means Sendek, Masiello and Hurley more likely. Also mean to me that this search has been going on for a long time. Will be surprised it's not one of those 3.

Not necessarily. Remember asu pilphered Michigan's coach before tourney and schembeckler ordered him out and had Steve fischer coach the team. We certainly can sign someone headed to nit.

So ruman, gun to your head who do you think Hobbs hires this week if you have to pick one?

He also said in the Zagsblog article that he was looking for the next Kevin Willard. That could mean a few things, but, Hobbs hired Willard when he was 34. Hobbs went young and hungry with his football hire. My choice, Masielo is 38.

What qualities will Hobbs be looking for?

"Hard work, dedication, integrity, doing it right," he said. "Working hard."

Somebody with New Jersey roots?

"That's great if we can, but there's a lot of good coaches out there right now," Hobbs said. "Just have to find the best person for Rutgers."

I'm in the tank for Hurley, so that's easy. I'm hoping Hobbs has been planning this since the day he got here. All three will do well. I think Hurley could be big here. You see that Seton Hall team. No doubt in my mind we look like that in 3-4 years with Hurley. They are almost all NY/NJ guys.

And I know many disagree - this is my opinion.

I do not believe this. It would be consistent though as we would continue to be a laughingstock. Can you imagine?

I'm totally against him being considered, but, was St Johns laughed at when they hired Chris Mullin ? I know he is an alum and NY native, but, he had zero coaching experience.

the media would flip out on Rutgers.....while, they celebrated Mullin as a great hire for St. Johns and creating a buzz around the program.

I laughed at St. John's. It's not the 1980's anymore. St. John's biggest card is that they play in MSG.

You can commit to a better BE program and still get to play in MSG at least 2x per year.

Besides for kids outside of NY, NJ the chance to play in MSG isn't that important.

St. John's, while struggling of late, has been way more consistent of a program than us and probably could afford the risk. Btw, I also thought that hiring was desperate and who knows how it will work out.

Jordan never coached in college and was a disaster. I can't see us immediately repeating the same pattern while being the worst P5 program.

A successful college coach either creates a winning program and stays, leaves for a better job, or retires. Littlepage, Wenzel, Bannon, Waters, Hill, Rice, and Jordan have all been fired. We never seem to learn.. If ever we needed someone with a little experience, it's now.

Good points, St. Johns could risk it. Plus, college coaching is about getting great players and he surrounded himself with 2 great recruiters. Calipari is not the "great Coach Cal" with Rutgers talent.

I think its masiello.

Maybe, Hobbs hired his last coach from the Pitino tree with Willard, maybe he returns to the well again.

Hobbs probably got a good recommendation from Pitino with Willard....maybe he gets the same with Masielo.

Massiello wants the job badly and would come with the lowest comp required.....but it's doubtful that he's the candidate....Hobbs would be fired if he dideeen't have a conversation with Sendek or Hurley, they are still the top 2 coaches that have the best chance to win and recruit at RU AND do the most with the current roster.

Former NJ kid and Duke star Jay Williams appears to have a better chance than some believe.

The question for Hurley is whether he'd abandon his staff and build from scratch.

Hurley would want to bring two x-Rutgers assistants (mike rice era back with him)
Great we could move another Seton hall person into Rutgers along with 2 mike rice assistants.
Miller from Dayton is a far better choice.

Williams is earning significantly more money at ESPN than he would as an assistant coach almost anywhere in the country.....he's interested in being the HC or not at all....
