Hobbs to Extend CVS?

Keith Sargeant is reporting that a new 4 year contract is in the works for CVS. http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball...nd_c_vivian_stringers.html#incart_river_index

With better shooting, "Hobbs is confident that Stringer will turn around the program next season."

Clearly, Hobbs has not been around long enough to watch Stringer ruin shooters. April Sykes comes to mind.

Here is a thought experiment. This year's team as is vs this year's team with only a trainer, practice coordinator and academic advisor, but NO CVS coaching.

I am sincerely confident that this team with NO CVS coaching would have a better record. That is the strongest case I can make for her retirement at the end of this season.

I pray this is not true I really don't know what Hobbs is thinking on this one. We are so irrelevant and CVS needs to retire. All the pollyanna's think that next year will be better which means what a 500 record! There is a reason girls transfer and it is not because they were lighting it up at their previous schools. If she gets 4 more years this program will be set back at least 6 more years!!

can't wait for it to become official, though I believe buyout will be small and terms will be completely RU friendly with a section about Vivian becoming HC Emeritus once she retires, some posters will go crazy with their complaints and ranting about contract
Fireworks will be something if it happens

My opinion is that this contract is to enable CVS to obtain her 1000th win then retire and also not have recruits wonder if she'll return next season.

I agree completely that the proposed contract extension is driven by 1000 wins and giving Stringer a better chance to recruit next season. However,I don't believe her tenure will last another four years.

agree about not lasting 4 and that's why contract will have a very small buyout and Coach Emeritus language .

Time to retire and we need to move on put her name in the rafters. I was a big supporter of hers but the last few years I have started to realize she has been losing her grip on the future of the program. I am also concerned about all the assistants that have moved on in short time periods lately. Something just is not adding up, also it seems that recruiting has gone the wrong way too. Maybe with all the transfers next year if they stay but this team has never been able to shoot from the outside or defend the 3 point shooters on the other team. We give away too much and we also can't make free throws ever consistently.

The 1000th win everyone was swearing she'd easily get by, what was it, this year? Yay, freakin' fantastic!

coldsprings --- I've been around long enough to know the most rediculous statement in a post I've ever seen. Yes, EVER. Stringer ruins shooters? She's absolutely ruined Cappy, Epiphany, Copper, oh god, I could go on. Dislike CVS all you want, want her out as coach, but such statements are worthy of putting you in the looney bin.

College BBall is littered with great HS shooters that just don't have it in big time Basketball. To blame it on a coach???? Ugghhhhh!

it is what it is and expect to see more complaints:popcorn:
I 'll not complain if it doesn't come to pass or be unhappy if it does.
Didn't really expect CVS back and understood why, but also understand 1000 is something that will make great PR and Hobbs faith in Vivian

Nice win today. Still doesn't explain a 37-point loss to the nation's 181st ranked team, however.

[thumb2] and it will be interesting to see if the team builds on this win or goes back in a slump.
Despite it looking like CVS is coming back, I still think Hobbs won't if the team doesn't keep playing competitively . More blowout games might change his mind. More games like this and CVS will return and have her contract extension signed

I agree that she ruined April due to her horrible coaching in re of yanking players quickly after a mistake. I wrote bout this many times in the past.

Players would have to look behind their shoulders when making a mistake, knowing that quick trigger CVS would yank them.

I remember that April was particularly more affected by this. You could see her confidence in her shot go down the drain after being quickly yanked for a mistake..

I really believe Hobbs is a bit intimidated in removing CVS and that he gives credence to the historical CVS and not the falled present one.

Totally agree that giving CVS another 4 years will truly make RU irrelevant and a major re-building situation, and will set RU back at least 6 years.

Watch what you wish for!!!

You guys are all NUTS ... I'm telling you as someone who has heard CViv's vision and knows how much the girls love playing for her and the overall love for RU athletics by her and the team ... she still has GREATNESS coming up and I will gladly come on here and say I told you so. She is a two years removed from having a great team get sent to play @UConn in the NCAAs, and a year removed from being the only coach to win a national tournament besides Geno. She gets a pass for this year because she simply could not focus on getting a lot of talent to fill this gap because of having to fly to Georgia a lot for sad reasons. And yet all this complaining about how far we've fallen, and we're 3-3 in the Big Ten.!!! If this is bad then I hope the men's team could at least be horrible! Wow. I am confident that even next season will we be a great team. Great! This year's team is gonna get on a roll also!! Have some faith and root for the ladies and our coach which are the pride of Rutgers Athletics.

I assume that you know that April was a starter her last two years and had the second-most minutes on the team both years. She averaged over 30 mpg over those two years. Also, she shot better her last two years than her first two years.

The article doesn't really make clear what the length of the extension would be. Back in May they were talking about a new four year deal, but I assume that it would replace the existing deal which then had two years left. Not sure what they're talking about now.

Very sarcastic. But I forgive you. The posts that are countering my point did not do a very good job. Very short sided. Explain why the amt of minutes she played means anything.

Because a player who's getting 30 minutes a game is not getting pulled all the time. (And, of course, someone whose shooting improved did not have her shot ruined by CVS.)

I think the job she has done this year will be one of her best ever. Sure the won-loss record won't be much. But to bring this team from where it was in November to where it is today is rather impressive. As you probably know, I'm a diehard WBB fan and after seeing their first several games, I thought that Bryant might be our only winnable game this year. But to her credit and more importantly to the players credit, they have bought in and worked extremely hard to improve. And they have. The hole they have to climb out of may be too deep. But I can go to games expecting an all out effort. Yesterday was a perfect example. No one expected even a close game against a solid MSU team just coming off a convincing 19 point win over #11 OSU. Sure there will be a clunker (Illinois) or a tough road loss (Nebraska) thrown in but this team is still learning to play together.

Naysayers will now come in to rip this apart but I think the improvement from November to January is absolutely astonishing. Add in Tyler and the "Rojos" (as BTN has dubbed the transfers) and there is hope for the future.

She should be measured on the level fan support. The number of ticket holders is about 10-15% what it used to be

Interesting take. Anyone up to looking up Home attendance for CVS games throughout her Rutgers tenure? My guess is that "fan support" as measured by attendance for Women's is not nearly as terrific as one might think. Especially if you compare to other successful programs.

According to this RU is doing better than the average attendance, but that doesn’t make it something we should consider good attendance.
